Key facts

  • This category covers knitted fabric sold in rolls; finished knit garments are in knit apparel, and flat-knitted sweaters and cardigans are in knitwear and sweaters.
  • Meters from 1 kg of fabric = 1,000 ÷ (GSM × open width in meters); a 180 GSM fabric with a 1.80 m open width gives about 3.09 m per kilogram.
  • In Cotton Incorporated's example, cotton single jersey measured 135 g/m² greige and 176 g/m² relaxed; ask in which state the GSM in a quote was measured.
  • Minimum orders are set per color; two company claims range from 50 kg to 500–1,000 kg per color (October 2026) and are not a standard.
  • Of the 1,294 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for knitted fabric (code 13.91), 698 are in Istanbul, followed by Bursa (139) and Tekirdağ (108) (October 2026).

Guide to Knitted Fabrics

Knitted fabric is made by looping yarn into stitches; this category lists the companies that make and sell loop-knitted fabric in rolls, the main material of T-shirts, sweatshirts, underwear and sportswear. In the Turkish market, single jersey is also sold as “penye kumaş” (penye fabric), but penye is the name of a combed cotton yarn, not a fabric structure. Knitted velour (also called knit velvet), whose surface is covered with cut pile, is listed here too; woven velvet, whose pile is formed by warp yarns, is listed under velvet. If you are looking for finished knitted garments, see knit apparel; for flat-knitted sweaters and cardigans, see knitwear and sweaters. The parent category is the fabrics page, and our guide on how to source fabric from Turkey covers the whole process from finding mills to ordering.

Knitted fabric sub-categories

If you know the name of the fabric you need, go straight to the sub-page:

  • Single jersey: knitted on a single needle bed, light and fine; T-shirts and basics.
  • Rib knit: ribbed and stretchy; necklines, cuffs and close-fitting styles.
  • Interlock: smooth on both faces, full-bodied, with edges that do not curl.
  • French terry (two-thread, iki iplik in Turkish) and three-thread fleece: sweatshirt and jogger fabrics.
  • Pique: textured surface, polo shirt fabric.
  • Scuba knit: also searched as “diving fabric” (dalgıç in Turkish); ask for the construction, yarn and GSM rather than the name.
  • Polar fleece: polyester-based, napped fleece.

Ask a knitted fabric supplier about MOQ per color, lead time and dyeing

  • MOQ and lead time: Wholesale knitted fabric is usually priced per kilogram, and on the supplier pages we reviewed the minimum order is defined per color. Company claims differ widely: a manufacturer of polyester knits states 500–1,000 kg per color and a 3–4 week lead time, while a wholesale company states 50 kg per color and delivery in 2–5 working days (October 2026). These are company claims, not standards; get a written quote for your own color and GSM.
  • Greige or dyed: Fabric coming off the machine is greige (raw); color and handle come with dyeing, printing and finishing. Ask whether the company dyes in-house or uses a contract (fason) dyehouse, and how color approval is given.
  • GSM and width: Have the GSM written with the state of measurement and the tolerance, and the width as open or tubular.
  • Tests: Ask for reports on length and width change after washing, pilling and color fastness. On shrinkage, see how to prevent fabric shrinkage.

In knitted fabric, yarn, dyeing and quantity set the per-kilogram price

The kilogram price is affected by the yarn (type, count, combed or carded, ring-spun or open-end), the elastane content, dyeing and finishing, and order quantity. Because the cutting plan is made in meters, convert the price to meters: at the same kilogram price and the same width, a meter of 300 GSM fabric costs about 1.67 times as much as a meter of 180 GSM fabric. For GSM ranges, see the fabric weight (GSM) guide by garment type.

Knitting clusters in Turkey

Of the 1,294 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for knitted fabrics (product code 13.91), 698 are in Istanbul, followed by Bursa (139), Tekirdağ (108), Denizli (77) and Kahramanmaraş (73) (October 2026). The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report and are given by province; facilities in Çorlu and Çerkezköy are counted under Tekirdağ.

The Textile, Leather and Clothing Industry Specialized Commission Report prepared for the Ninth Development Plan (State Planning Organization, 2007; in Turkish) also names Istanbul as a cluster for circular knitting, knitwear and socks, and Çorlu and Çerkezköy for finishing, especially the finishing of circular-knitted fabric. The report is an observation of about twenty years ago; use the province filter on the page to find companies close to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert knitted fabric from kilograms to meters?

Meters from 1 kg of fabric = 1,000 ÷ (GSM × open width in meters). For example, 1 kg of a 180 GSM fabric with a 1.80 m open width gives about 3.09 m, and a 300 GSM fabric of the same width gives about 1.85 m. A meter of tubular fabric can mean two layers of fabric, so state in the quote whether the width is open or tubular.

Why does fabric weight change with the state in which it is measured?

When the fabric relaxes, the loops move closer together, and the number of loops per unit area, and so the GSM, rises. In Cotton Incorporated's example, cotton single jersey measured 135 g/m² in the greige state and 176 g/m² in the relaxed state. Ask in which state the GSM in the quote was measured.

How is shrinkage after washing checked on knitted fabric?

Washing and drying conditions follow EN ISO 6330, and the calculation of dimensional change follows EN ISO 5077. Write into the contract which program and which limit value apply; cotton knits in particular are prone to dimensional change (Cotton Incorporated, ISP 1009).

What is the minimum order quantity for knitted fabric in kilograms?

There is no standard quantity; it depends on the company, the type of fabric and whether it works from stock or from production. On the supplier pages we reviewed, the minimum is defined per color: a manufacturer of polyester knits states 500–1,000 kg per color and a 3–4 week lead time, while a wholesale company states 50 kg per color and delivery in 2–5 working days (October 2026). These are company claims, not standards; get a written quote for your own color and GSM.

In which provinces are knitted fabric manufacturers located in Turkey?

Of the 1,294 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for knitted fabrics (product code 13.91), 698 are in Istanbul, followed by Bursa (139), Tekirdağ (108), Denizli (77) and Kahramanmaraş (73) (October 2026). The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report; the figures are by province (facilities in Çorlu and Çerkezköy are counted under Tekirdağ).
