Key facts

  • According to Cotton Incorporated, rib stretches about twice as much as single jersey crosswise, so the pattern and size allowance for rib body fabric are set for this stretch.
  • In the Turkish market 1x1 rib is known as ribana and 2x2 rib as kaşkorse (Dönmez, 2008); naming varies between companies, so write the rib type in the quote.
  • There is no standard GSM range for rib: one manufacturer gives 180–260 g/m², while the target weight in Ne 30/1 cotton research samples is 125–145 g/m².
  • Synthetic fibers do not show cotton's swelling-and-shrinking behavior in washing (ISP 1009), so rib and body fabric of different fibers can change size differently.
  • In garments made of different knit constructions, some panels may shrink during cutting and sewing while others grow (ISP 1009); wash the collar and waistband sewn to the body on the sample.

Two different buyers look for ribana (rib knit). One needs collar, cuff and waistband rib for T-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts; the other wants a close-fitting garment sewn in rib fabric. The questions to ask are different for each. For the structure, see the rib knit glossary entry.

TOBB does not list rib knit as a separate product; for knitted fabrics overall (code 13.91), 698 of the 1,294 firms with a valid capacity report are in Istanbul, followed by Bursa and Tekirdağ (October 2026). This is the overall distribution of knitted fabric manufacturers; verify a rib producer with the province filter and the quote.

If you are buying collar and cuff rib

Here the rib is the companion of the main fabric, so matching comes before everything else.

  • Color: If the rib and the body fabric are dyed in different dyehouses, a shade difference can appear. Have both dyed to the same approved sample and compare them side by side on delivery.
  • Fiber: If the body fabric is cotton, cotton or cotton-elastane rib makes matching easier. According to Cotton Incorporated, synthetic fibers do not show the swelling-and-shrinking behavior that cotton shows in washing (ISP 1009), so different fibers can change size differently.
  • Cutting and sewing: The same bulletin notes that in garments made of different knit constructions, some panels may relax and shrink during cutting and sewing while others may grow. Sew the collar and waistband together with the body on the sample and have it washed.
  • MOQ per color: Even if the main fabric order is small, rib is a separate color lot. Ask for the minimum order per color and the lead time for the rib as well.
  • Rib type: 1x1 and 2x2 rib are different fabrics (in Turkish trade, ribana and kaşkorse). Write which one you want in the spec.

If you are buying rib as a body fabric

According to Cotton Incorporated, rib stretches about twice as much as single jersey crosswise. When it is used as a body fabric, the pattern and the size allowance are set for this stretch. Elastane improves recovery, so have the percentage written in the quote. Test recovery after several washes on a sample, and have length and width change after washing measured.

Elastane, yarn, dyeing and leftover risk set rib cost

Elastane content, yarn and dyeing set the unit price; with rib, also account for quantity risk. The rib needed for collars and cuffs is usually less than the body fabric, so a minimum order per color can turn into leftover stock. Discussing the rib in the same conversation as the body fabric, and limiting the number of colors, helps you manage this cost.

Elastic tapes and bands that are sewn on are a different product group; see elastics and tapes. To see how single jersey, piqué, interlock and rib behave together in a T-shirt, read the T-shirt fabric guide. For alternatives for the body fabric and other knitted fabrics, see the single jersey and knitted fabric pages.

Frequently asked questions

Should collar rib be bought from the same supplier as the main fabric?

It is not required, but it makes matching color and composition easier. If you buy from different companies, give the rib supplier the approved sample of the main fabric, and on delivery check the rib side by side with the body fabric.

Are ribana and kaşkorse the same fabric?

They are not the same, but they are related: in the Turkish market 1x1 rib is known as ribana and 2x2 rib as kaşkorse (Dönmez, 2008, a Turkish master's thesis). Because naming can vary between companies, write the rib type and the GSM in the quote.

How do I choose rib GSM relative to the main fabric?

There is no standard GSM range for rib. One knitted-fabric manufacturer gives 180–260 g/m² (about 5.3 to 7.7 oz/yd²), while the target weight in research samples made of Ne 30/1 cotton yarn is 125–145 g/m² (about 3.7 to 4.3 oz/yd²) (Erkoç, 2006, cited in Dönmez, 2008). With the same yarn and stitch length, rib is thicker and heavier than single jersey. Try the collar band together with the body fabric on the sample and decide on the thickness difference that way.

Why ask for the minimum order per color for rib separately?

Even if the main fabric order is small, rib is a separate color lot with its own minimum order and lead time; there is no standard quantity. The rib needed for collars and cuffs is usually less than the body fabric, so a minimum per color can turn into leftover stock. Discuss the rib in the same conversation as the main fabric, limit the number of colors and get the minimum in writing.

What determines the price of rib fabric?

Elastane content, yarn and dyeing set the unit price; with rib, quantity risk comes on top. To compare quotes on the same spec, have the elastane percentage, the rib type (1x1 or 2x2) and the GSM written in.
