Key facts
- In this guide, knit apparel means garments cut and sewn from knitted fabric (T-shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts, tracksuits); sweaters and cardigans are in the knitwear and sweaters category.
- In one Cotton Incorporated example, the same single jersey differed by about 30% in weight when measured raw versus relaxed; write the state of measurement into the specification.
- Vocational modules of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) teach spreading knit fabric without tension and relaxing it for about 24 hours; the buyer's specification overrides this.
- Daily output = operators on the line × net working minutes per day × efficiency ÷ the style's SMV; this check covers the sewing line only.
- In each of five TOBB knitted apparel product codes, more than half of the firms with a valid capacity report are in Istanbul; the share is about 53% to 66% by code (October 2026).

Knit apparel (cut and sew) is clothing made by cutting and sewing knitted fabric (such as single jersey, piqué, interlock, French terry and three-thread fleece): T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, polo shirts and tracksuits. Sweaters and cardigans knitted on flat-bed machines (knitwear and sweaters), underwear, socks and hosiery, pajamas and loungewear and swimwear and beachwear have their own categories; shirts and pants are listed under woven apparel.
In knit apparel, ask about the fabric first
Fabric decides both cost and quality in knit apparel. Ask the company:
- Who supplies the fabric? In CMT (contract sewing) the fabric is yours; a full-package manufacturer buys it. A company with its own knitting plant manages the fabric stage under one roof.
- Where does the minimum come from? If a custom color is to be dyed, the real minimum often comes from the fabric lot, not from the sewing line. Working with a company that holds the fabric in stock makes small quantities easier.
- Where does the lead time start? If the company knits and dyes the fabric, the lead time includes the fabric stage. Have it written whether the time counts from the fabric order or from the approved sample.
- At what state is the GSM measured? In one example, the same single jersey measured raw and measured relaxed differed in weight by about 30%. Write the structure, composition, GSM and state of measurement into the specification; see our fabric weight guide.
In knit apparel, sewing time and size breakdown move the price
Sewing labor depends on the number and duration of operations in the style: between a crew-neck T-shirt and a hooded sweatshirt with pockets and a zipper, the sewing time, and so the labor cost, differs markedly. Many colors and sizes need more frequent machine set-ups and thread changes, which raises the unit cost in small lots. Printing, embroidery and washing are often priced separately from sewing; if the company sends these out, add separate time to the lead time.
Check the claimed capacity with arithmetic
You can test a company's stated capacity with a simple ratio: daily output = number of operators on the line × net working minutes per day × efficiency ÷ the standard minute value of the style (SMV). This covers the sewing line only; fabric, cutting, intermediate processes and shipping come on top. Ask the company for its SMV and efficiency assumptions in writing.
What to write into a knit apparel quality specification
Knit fabric can change in length and width in washing; write the post-wash dimensional change check and its limit into the specification. Sewing relies mainly on overlock and coverstitch machines, so at the quote stage confirm that the company's machine park matches the stitch type your product needs. In final inspection, have measurements checked against the size chart, along with the hang of the garment and the labels.
Where are knit apparel manufacturers located?
Knit apparel has no single product code in the TOBB Industry Database; knitted T-shirts, shirts and blouses, sweatshirts, tracksuits, jackets and pants are tracked under five codes (14.13.1, 14.14.1, 14.14.30, 14.19.12, 14.39.10), which also cover products from neighboring categories such as underwear, pajamas, swimwear and sweaters. In each code, more than half of the firms with a valid capacity report are in Istanbul; the share ranges from about 53% to 66% by code. For knitted T-shirts, undershirts and tank tops (14.14.30), for example, 1,260 of 2,396 are in Istanbul (October 2026). The codes cannot be added up because one firm can appear under several codes. The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report, so small workshops without one may be missing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between knit apparel and knitwear and sweaters?
In this guide, knit apparel (cut and sew) means products made by cutting and sewing knitted fabric (T-shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts, tracksuits). Knitwear and sweaters is a separate category and covers sweaters and cardigans knitted on flat-bed knitting machines. If you are not sure which group your product belongs to, look at both lists.
What is the minimum order for custom-colored knit fabric?
There is no official data. A 2026 factory directory gives 500-800 meters per color for custom-dyed jersey; a manufacturer that has the fabric in stock can start with smaller quantities. Ask for the fabric minimum separately from the sewing minimum.
Why is knit fabric relaxed before cutting?
Knit and elastane fabrics are wound onto the roll under tension and stretch; fabric cut without relaxing pulls back after cutting. The vocational modules of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) teach spreading the fabric without tension and relaxing it for about 24 hours. If the buyer's specification calls for a different time, follow that.
