- A greige knit fabric manufacturer lists polar as 100% polyester, napped on both faces, light and warm, at 220–400 g/m² (the company's own claim, not a standard).
- According to Cotton Incorporated, napping pulls fibers out of the fabric surface to form a dense pile.
- A study on polyester-cotton fleece calls pilling a common surface defect and notes that adding polyester fiber increases it (Hossain et al., 2021); it did not measure 100% polyester polar.
- At the same price per kilogram and the same width, a meter of 300 g/m² polar costs about 1.36 times as much as a meter of 220 g/m² polar.
- Polar fleece blankets are listed under blankets; this page covers polar fleece sold by the meter.
Guide to Polar Fleece

Polar fleece is a knitted fabric made from polyester whose surface is brushed (napped) to give it a soft, insulating pile. Here you can find companies in Turkey that knit, brush and dye polar, and fabric merchants that sell it. Cotton or cotton-polyester sweatshirt fabrics with a brushed inner face do not count as polar; for those, see French terry and three-thread fleece. For polar fleece blankets, see blankets; this page covers polar fleece sold by the meter. All knit types are on the knitted fabrics page.
Under TOBB's product code for knitted pile and raised fabrics such as fleece (13.91.11), most of the 48 firms with a valid capacity report are in Denizli and Gaziantep (October 2026). The code is not specific to polar fleece and covers knitted pile and looped fabrics in general; because it counts only manufacturers with a capacity report, it does not show every firm that makes polar fleece.
Tell polar apart from brushed fabrics
Naming is loose across suppliers. A greige knit fabric manufacturer lists polar as 100% polyester, napped on both faces, light and warm; in three-thread fleece the napped side is usually the back (CottonWorks). Cotton Incorporated describes napping as pulling fibers out of the fabric surface to form a dense pile. Do not settle for the word “polar” in a quote: have it state the composition, how many faces are napped and the weight.
Tie pilling to a test report
A study on cotton-polyester fleece calls pilling a common surface defect in these fabrics and notes that adding polyester fiber increases pilling (Hossain et al., 2021). The study did not measure 100% polyester polar; even so, the risk should be tested on a sample of any polyester-dominant fabric. Back a supplier's “anti-pilling” claim with a modified Martindale report (EN ISO 12945-2) and write the accepted grade into the contract.
Weight and cost per meter
Price depends on the type and count of the polyester yarn, the weight, brushing and anti-pilling finishes, the batch size per color and special requests such as recycled yarn. At the same price per kilogram and the same width, a meter of 300 g/m² polar costs about 1.36 times a meter of 220 g/m²; compare quotes on cost per meter. For choosing a weight, see our fabric weight by product guide.
Recycled content
Fleece can also be made from recycled PET bottles. If you will carry this claim onto a label or catalog, ask the supplier for the chain of documents; what each document proves is explained in the certification guide.
Color and lots
Ask for the MOQ per color and have the quote say whether each color will be dyed separately. When the goods arrive, compare not only color but also pile density and handle: place the approved sample next to the delivered lot and judge both by hand and by eye.

Frequently asked questions
Is polar fleece the same as three-thread fleece?
No, though the names get mixed up. Polar usually refers to a polyester fleece with a napped surface. Three-thread fabric can be cotton or cotton-polyester and its back is mostly brushed, although unbrushed versions are also sold. Have the quote state the composition, the brushed face and the weight.
How do I choose the weight of polar fleece?
A greige knit fabric manufacturer gives a wide range of 220–400 g/m² for 100% polyester polar (the company's own claim, not a standard). That spread shows that fabrics of very different thickness are sold under the same “polar” name. Write the target weight and the permitted tolerance into the order, and check pile thickness and handle on the sample.
Which documents should I ask for with recycled polar fleece?
Textile Exchange's GRS (Global Recycled Standard) or RCS (Recycled Claim Standard) certificate and the transaction certificate for your order. Both track recycled content along the supply chain; GRS also covers the social, environmental and chemical criteria of the facilities, while RCS does not. Check the certificate holder, the scope and the validity date.
How should I ask about minimum order and lots for polar fleece?
There is no standard quantity; ask for the minimum order per color and have the quote state whether each color will be dyed separately. When the goods arrive, place the approved sample next to the delivered lot and judge color, pile density and handle by hand and by eye together.
What does the price of polar fleece depend on?
The type and count of the polyester yarn, the weight, brushing and anti-pilling finishes, the batch size per color and special requests such as recycled yarn set the price. At the same price per kilogram and the same width, a meter of 300 g/m² polar costs about 1.36 times as much as a meter of 220 g/m² polar; compare quotes on cost per meter.
