Key facts

  • The fiber, dye and chemical sector is split into these sub-categories: textile fibers, textile chemicals (including dyes), textile printing inks and textile recycling.
  • Dye class mainly follows fiber type: reactive dyes for cellulosic fibers such as cotton, disperse dyes for polyester, acid dyes for wool, silk and nylon, cationic dyes for acrylic.
  • ECO PASSPORT and ZDHC MRSL conformance cover the chemical product, not the finished fabric; ZDHC Level 0 is a supplier declaration only, and Levels 1–3 need third-party review.
  • In 2024, Turkey ranked first in the world in viscose staple fiber (HS 5504.10) imports, at about USD 559 million (UN Comtrade via World Bank WITS).
  • A 2019 report by the Zafer Development Agency describes Usak as Turkey's textile recycling center, home to firms that turn waste into fiber and recycled yarn.

Guide to Fibers, Dyes and Chemicals

This sector covers the inputs of yarn and fabric: fiber; the dyes, auxiliary chemicals and printing inks that dye houses and print shops use; and recyclers that turn textile waste back into fiber. You will not find yarn or fabric here, so choose the sub-category that matches your product.

Each sub-category has a different buyer

  • Textile fibers: loose fiber sold by the kilogram, bale or sack, such as cotton lint, polyester staple fiber (PSF), acrylic, viscose, recycled fiber and fill fiber. For fiber types, see the fabric types guide.
  • Textile chemicals and dyes: dyes (reactive, disperse, acid, vat, pigment) and auxiliary chemicals for pretreatment, dyeing, finishing, washing and printing.
  • Textile printing inks: plastisol, water-based and discharge screen-printing inks, pigment print paste, digital textile inks, and DTF film and powder (see printing methods).
  • Textile recycling: licensed companies that buy, sort and shred offcuts, production scrap, rejects and used clothing. Demand runs the other way here: a garment maker with waste to sell finds buyers.

Where this sector ends

The form in which a product is sold draws the line. Yarn on cones or bobbins is in Yarns, and sewing thread for garment makers is in Sewing Thread. Companies that dye, print or wash a customer's fabric for a fee are in Contract Workshops and Services, under dyeing and finishing, textile printing and garment washing; this sector covers those who sell them materials. Machine sellers are in Textile Machinery (printing machines, dyeing and finishing machines), but consumables such as ink, film and powder stay here. Roll nonwovens and deadstock fabric belong to Fabrics.

Padding (vatka in Turkish trade) is two different products: shoulder pads (a garment trim) belong under interlinings; roll, fiber or quilted wadding belongs under nonwovens; loose fill fiber belongs under textile fibers. For pigment, the use decides: print paste and pigment printing inks belong under printing inks, while pigments and dyes used in dyeing belong under textile chemicals. Glass and carbon fiber are out of scope.

Matching dyes to fibers, and the documents to ask for

Dye class follows fiber type. The main pairings are reactive dyes for cellulosic fibers (cotton, linen, viscose), disperse dyes for polyester and acetate, acid dyes for wool, silk and nylon, and cationic dyes for acrylic (e-PG Pathshala). State your fiber blend when requesting a quote.

The two environmental documents requested for chemicals cover the chemical product, not the finished fabric. OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT certifies the chemicals, colorants and auxiliaries used to make textiles and leather; the certificate is valid for one year. The ZDHC Gateway is the platform where products conforming to the MRSL (a list of restricted substances for chemical formulations used in production) are registered. Level 0 is only a supplier declaration; Levels 1–3 require third-party review. Ask for the safety data sheet (SDS) as well. The textile certifications guide explains how the documents differ, and testing laboratories can measure independently.

Fiber quotes and viscose imports

Have a fiber quote state the fiber type, form (staple or filament), fineness (denier or dtex), cut length, whether it is undyed or dyed, and the packaging unit. For viscose, also ask whether the supplier is a producer or an importer, and where the product originates: according to UN Comtrade data published on World Bank WITS, Turkey ranked first in the world in viscose staple fiber (HS 5504.10) imports in 2024, at about USD 559 million. A 2021 report by the İpekyolu Development Agency shows the same ranking for 2016–2020.

The recycling cluster in Usak

A March 2019 report by the Zafer Development Agency describes Usak as Turkey's textile recycling center, home to many firms that break waste down on carding machines to make fiber and recycled yarn. Based on 2014 data, it reports that about 75% of Turkey's recycled yarn production was in Usak. These figures are dated; use the province filter for the current distribution. For recycled-content claims, ask for the GRS certificate; certification services are listed under consulting and certification.

Frequently asked questions

What decides the minimum order and price for fiber, dyes and chemicals?

There is no fixed industry value. The minimum order depends on the unit of sale (bale, sack, kilogram, jerrycan or drum) and on whether the product ships from stock or from a production or import lot. Fiber prices depend on fiber type, fineness, cut length and recycled content; chemical prices on the type of product and its packaging; both on lot size and payment terms. Ask for the unit, the quantity condition, the Incoterm, the currency and the quote's validity period in writing.

Which documents should I ask a dye or chemical supplier for?

Start with the safety data sheet (SDS) and the technical data sheet. If the supplier makes an environmental claim, ask for the OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT certificate or the product's ZDHC Gateway record. Both cover the chemical product, not the finished fabric. The ZDHC level matters: Level 0 is only a supplier declaration, while Levels 1–3 require third-party review. Check which product the document covers and its validity date.

Which category covers reactive, disperse or pigment dyes?

Dyes and pigments used in dyeing are in Textile Chemicals and Dyes. Print paste, pigment printing inks and digital textile inks are in Textile Printing Inks. A company that sells both chemicals and printing inks can be listed in both categories.

Which category covers padding, wadding and fill fiber?

Loose fill fiber (siliconized fiber, ball fiber) is in Textile Fibers. Roll, fiber or quilted wadding goes to Nonwovens, and shoulder pads and similar garment trims go to Interlinings. Finished filled products such as pillows and comforters are in the Home Textiles sector.

Who can I sell textile scrap and waste to?

Companies that buy offcuts, production scrap, rejects and used clothing are in Textile Recycling. As of the date of this page, Turkey's Waste Management Regulation requires waste processing facilities to hold a temporary operation certificate or an environmental permit and license. Before handing over waste, check the company's document and which waste types it accepts; for your own obligations, consult the provincial environment directorate or an environmental consultant. Usable rolls and lots of fabric can instead be sold under Deadstock and Surplus Fabrics.
