Guide to Pajamas and Loungewear
- Last updated:
- Fact-checked by:
- Gizem Polat
Sleepwear and loungewear is the product group made up of pajama sets, nightgowns, robes, lounge sets and postpartum (lohusa) sets; this category covers the companies that make them. İHKİB, the Istanbul apparel exporters' association, counts them (HS headings 6107, 6108, 6207 and 6208) as underwear and nightwear items within its underwear group. Here they are listed separately because the questions to ask a supplier differ: underwear turns on size and cup breakdown, pajamas on fabric and the structure of the set.
Which category is your product in?
- Fashion nightgowns, lingerie and socks: underwear and socks and hosiery; a company that does both can select both.
- Sweatpants and joggers worn outside: tracksuits and joggers.
- Baby and children's pajamas: baby and kids clothing; a company that makes them selects both categories.
- Bathrobes: towels and bathrobes. İHKİB's export table counts robes (sabahlık) and bathrobes on the same lines; in this guide, robes are on the pajama page.
- Sewing only (CMT): if you supply the fabric, also see contract sewing workshops.
Choose the fabric by product
Our sources mention interlock and velour for knit pajamas and loungewear, ranforce for woven pajama sets and filament satin for nightgowns; these are usage examples, not market shares. For summer wear, see breathable fabrics for summer. Ask who supplies the fabric: with custom-dyed fabric, the minimum often comes from the fabric lot, not from the sewing line.
Children's pajamas: flammability rules
If you will export children's pajamas or nightgowns, choose the fabric and cut around flammability rules. In the U.S., CPSC requires children's sleepwear to pass flammability testing or to fall under an exemption such as tight-fitting garments, and it treats similar garments marketed as children's "loungewear" as sleepwear. In Europe, there is a standard for the burning behavior of children's nightwear and nightwear fabrics, EN 14878. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 does not answer this question: the standard states that its label is not a quality label and says nothing about burning behavior. This information is current as of October 11, 2026; confirm your target market's current rule with your importer or a test laboratory.
Ask a pajama manufacturer about set matching, wash shrinkage and the bill of materials
- Set matching: Have it written that the top and bottom are cut from the same fabric and dye lot.
- Size after washing: Wash the sample, compare it with the size chart and write down the change you will accept.
- Bill of materials: Ask line by line who supplies the elastic, bias binding, buttons, lace and labels (elastic and tape, buttons). If printing, embroidery or packing is done outside (printing, embroidery, packaging and hangers), add separate time to the lead time.
In pajamas, fabric and the number of operations drive the price
The price depends on the fabric's fiber content, weight (GSM) and print, the number of pieces in the set, the number of operations (pockets, bias binding, buttons, lace), the size and color breakdown, and the quantity. Compare quotes on the same fabric, GSM and bill of materials. There is no official minimum for pajamas; the floor comes from quantity per style, fabric per color and the trim minimum (see why MOQ is never one number).
Export figures and where pajamas are made
According to İHKİB's underwear export report (April 2026; in Turkish), Turkey's exports of women's and girls' cotton knitted nightdresses and pajamas (HS 6108.31) were US$69.2 million in 2025, down from US$138.9 million in 2021. These are export values, not production volume.
For location, see the Industry Database of TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey: of the 452 firms with a valid capacity report for women's knitted nightdresses and pajamas (product code 14.14.14.30), 284 are in Istanbul; for women's woven nightdresses and pajamas (14.14.24.30), 83 of 178 are in Istanbul and 34 in Denizli (October 2026). The counts include only manufacturers with a valid capacity report. In the Düzce Chamber of Commerce and Industry's 2024 report (in Turkish), one of the 131 members that reported export figures lists pajamas and nightgowns among its products; that is one company's declaration, not proof of a cluster. Use the province filter, confirm the production site on the company profile and ask which work is subcontracted (how to choose a CMT workshop).

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for pajamas made in Turkey?
There is no official or sourced minimum figure for pajamas. The floor comes from three places: quantity per style, fabric per color and the trim supplier's minimum. With custom-dyed fabric, the fabric's minimum per color often sets the limit, while a manufacturer working from stock fabric may accept a smaller quantity. Ask for the minimum separately per style, size and color, and get it in writing.
What do I need to know to sell children's pajamas in the U.S.?
CPSC requires children's sleepwear in sizes 0 through 14 to pass flammability testing, or to qualify for an exemption such as tight-fitting or infant garments by meeting that exemption's measurement and labeling conditions. CPSC gives untreated 100% cotton, silk, rayon and modal as examples of fabrics that typically fail the test. Children's products are tested at a CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory, and the importer or the U.S. manufacturer issues the Children's Product Certificate (CPC). This is current as of October 11, 2026; confirm the current rule with your importer or a test laboratory.
Are pajamas listed under underwear?
In export statistics, yes: the İHKİB underwear report covers HS headings 6107, 6108, 6207 and 6208 as underwear and nightwear items, and nightgown and pajama lines are among them. On Tekstil Rehberi, pajamas and loungewear are listed separately. A company that also makes fashion nightgowns or lingerie can select the underwear category too, so check both lists.
Is an OEKO-TEX certificate enough for pajamas?
No, not on its own. STANDARD 100 is a harmful-substances certificate; the standard states that its label is not a quality label and says nothing about burning behavior or features such as drawstrings. The certificate scope names the product category, material composition, treatment status (dyed, printed) and accessories such as sewing thread and labels, so check that your pajama's fabric, print and trims are covered. You can look up a certificate number on the OEKO-TEX website.
