Baby and kids clothing is the category of companies that make baby rompers, pajamas, T-shirts, pants and children's clothing. The sewing is similar to adult wear; the difference lies in safety expectations and order structure. For adult pajamas and loungewear, see pajamas and loungewear; a company that also makes baby and children's pajamas can select that category too. According to İHKİB, the Istanbul apparel exporters' association, baby clothing exports were about US$141 million in January-September 2026, a small item within total clothing exports of about US$12.4 billion (İHKİB, October 2026, in Turkish). The figure shows export value, not production volume.
Safety comes first
The points to watch in children's clothing are drawstrings and cords, small parts such as buttons, snaps and appliqués, sharp ends, and broken needles that may remain after sewing. Ask the company for a written process on these: whether small parts are tested against pull-off, and how needle and metal checks are done.
For cords and drawstrings the European standard is EN 14682, which covers children's clothing up to age 14; as of October 8, 2026, its current edition dates from 2014. If you sell to the EU, ask whether the design was assessed to this standard, and confirm the current product safety rules of your target market with your importer or a testing laboratory. On zippers, a top stop that leaves no sharp tooth end exposed, and a nickel-free option, can be preferred (zipper guide).
Certificates and test reports
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 assesses baby products in a separate class, but the text of the standard states plainly that the label says nothing about product safety or structural features such as drawstrings (OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, edition 01.2026). In addition to the certificate, ask an independent textile testing laboratory for a product-specific report, and check which fabric, trims and style it was issued for. You can check a certificate number on the OEKO-TEX website.
Fabric and sizes
Cotton knits are used in baby clothing; interlock is one of them. Because cotton knits can shrink in the wash, check dimensional change after washing and the shrinkage result on the sample. Baby sizes are given by months and children's sizes by age, so even a small collection turns into many size-color lines.
Ask a baby and kids clothing maker for references, test reports and an inspection plan
- References: Which baby and children's products has it made, and for which buyers?
- Tests and documents: Which test reports can it supply for fabric, trims and the finished product?
- Quality control: As the buyer, write your inspection plan (AQL and final inspection stage) into the contract (AQL guide); you can ask for a stricter plan on children's products.
- Labels: What information goes on the size and care label, and who prepares it? (labeling requirements)
- Small quantities: Does it work with many styles in small lots?
In baby and kids clothing, fabric, test costs and size breakdown set the price
Fabric type and composition, trims and testing costs, style details (snap openings, zippers, appliqué), size and color breakdown and quantity set the price. Small sizes use little fabric, but the number of operations can be similar to larger sizes, so unit labor does not fall in proportion as the size gets smaller. Have the quote state separately whether test and document costs are included and who pays.
Where is baby clothing made in Turkey?
Of the 261 firms with a valid capacity report in the Industry Database of TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, for knitted babies' garments (product code 14.19.11), 119 are in Denizli and 84 in Istanbul; for woven babies' garments (14.19.21), 68 of 228 are in Bursa, 64 in Denizli and 48 in Istanbul (October 2026). Both codes cover only garments and accessories for babies up to 86 cm in height. TOBB counts children's clothing under the same codes as adult products (for example “for men or boys” and “for women or girls”), so there is no separate provincial data for children's clothing. The code names also cover accessories such as diapers and mittens, so the counts are not limited to garment makers and include only manufacturers with a capacity report. Confirm the production site on the company profile.

Frequently asked questions
Is an OEKO-TEX certificate enough for baby clothing?
Not on its own. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 assesses baby articles up to 36 months in Product Class I, where the strictest limit values apply, but it covers harmful substances only. Safety issues such as small parts and drawstrings must be shown separately with product-specific tests. Also check that the certificate covers the fabric and trims of your product.
What should I ask about buttons and snaps on children's clothing?
Ask in writing whether small parts are tested against pull-off, by what method and how often they are checked. Also ask whether broken-needle and metal checks are done after sewing, and make recording the results a condition.
What does the minimum order depend on in baby and kids clothing?
There is no official figure. Baby sizes go by months and children's sizes by age, so the number of sizes is high; ask for the minimum separately per style, size and color. A custom color or printed fabric can raise the fabric's own minimum.
