Key facts

  • In TOBB data (October 2026), 72 of the 105 firms with a capacity report for women's knitted swimwear are in Istanbul, as are most of the 40 firms under men's knitted swimwear.
  • Two swimwear lines rank in İHKİB's 2025 sportswear top ten: men's and boys' woven man-made fiber (US$23.6 million) and women's and girls' knitted synthetic (US$15.0 million).
  • According to a spandex manufacturer, standard spandex loses stretch faster when exposed to chlorine, sunscreen, heat and UV; for pool wear, ask for a chlorine-resistant spandex type.
  • ISO 105-E03:2010 tests color fastness to chlorinated pool water: 50 and 100 mg/l active chlorine for swimwear, 20 mg/l for beach robes and towels. It does not measure stretch.
  • Under EU Regulation 2016/425, a product designed and made with specific UV-protective properties is personal protective equipment and needs CE marking, per European Commission guidelines.

Guide to Swimwear and Beachwear

Swimwear and beachwear is the category of companies in Turkey that make swimsuits, bikinis, haşema (full-coverage modest swimwear, often called burkini), board shorts, sarongs (pareos) and beach dresses. Chlorine, sunscreen and sun make the fabric, lining and color fastness the first things to check. For the stretch knit itself, see knitted fabrics and spandex yarn.

Swimwear, sportswear or modest clothing?

İHKİB, the Istanbul apparel exporters' association, does not list swimwear as a separate group in its sportswear export report; it tracks it within sportswear, under customs heading 6112 for knitted and 6211 for woven. We list it separately because the questions to ask a supplier differ. If your product fits elsewhere:

Chlorine, sunscreen and color fastness

Spandex gives swimwear its stretch and recovery. According to one spandex manufacturer, standard spandex degrades faster under chlorine, sunscreen, heat and UV, showing up as stretch loss and sagging. For pool use, ask the fabric supplier for a chlorine-resistant spandex type and a test report. For color, ISO 105-E03:2010 measures color fastness to chlorinated pool water, with 50 and 100 mg/l active chlorine for swimwear and 20 mg/l for accessories such as beach robes and towels. For printed swimwear, the print method depends on the fiber (printing methods).

Sewing and wet sampling

The seam has to stretch with the fabric, so ask whether the company has coverstitch and overlock machines. Have it list in writing who supplies cups, lining, elastic, buckles and ties (elastics and tapes). Check the sample wet as well as dry: after soaking and drying, do the measurements, lining position or stretch recovery change?

UV protection claims

If you will sell a product as UV protective, have the fabric tested first. According to Hohenstein's factsheet, UV STANDARD 801 measures the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) on new fabric and after stretching, wetting, abrasion and washing, which suits swimwear worn wet and stretched. The European Commission's guidelines on the PPE Regulation (October 2025) treat a product designed and made with specific UV-protective properties as personal protective equipment (PPE) under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, and PPE is placed on the market with CE marking. They also say sunlight is not an “atmospheric condition” under the regulation's weather exclusion for private use. This is current as of October 11, 2026, and covers the EU only. Settle the conformity assessment route with a testing laboratory, and confirm the rules with your importer and an expert before selling in the EU.

What sets swimwear price and MOQ?

Price depends on the fabric type and source (stock, custom print, imported), pieces per set, trims such as lining and cups, sewing operations, size and color breakdown, tests and quantity. We found no sourced minimum order quantity (MOQ) for swimwear; the floor comes from quantity per style, fabric per color or print, and trim suppliers' minimums (private label guide). Compare quotes on the same fabric and materials list.

Export figures and where companies are

İHKİB's April 2026 sportswear export report does not give swimwear's share separately. Of US$395 million in sportswear exports in 2025, its top ten items include two swimwear lines: men's and boys' woven swimwear of man-made fibers, US$23.6 million, and women's and girls' knitted swimwear of synthetic fibers, US$15.0 million (US$28.8 million in 2021). These are export values, not production volume. For company location, see the Industry Database of TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey: of the 105 firms with a valid capacity report for women's knitted swimwear (product code 14.19.12.50), 72 are in Istanbul, as are most of the 40 firms under men's knitted swimwear (14.19.12.40) (October 2026). These counts reflect the knitted swimwear codes only and include only manufacturers with a valid capacity report. Use the city filter and confirm the production site on the company profile (how to choose a CMT workshop).

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for swimwear in Turkey?

We found no official or sourced MOQ figure for swimwear. Three things set the floor: the quantity per style, the fabric and lining per color or print, and the minimums of suppliers of materials such as cups. On custom-printed or custom-dyed fabric, the fabric usually sets the limit; a company that works from fabric in stock may accept a smaller quantity. If bikini tops and bottoms are sold separately, ask whether the minimum counts pieces or sets. Ask for the minimum per style, color and size, and get it in writing.

How do I specify chlorine resistance for swimwear fabric?

Ask for two separate things. For color, ISO 105-E03:2010 measures color fastness to chlorinated pool water and sets 50 and 100 mg/l active chlorine for swimwear; write into the specification which level and which fastness grade you accept. The standard does not measure stretch. A spandex manufacturer says standard spandex loses stretch faster under chlorine, sunscreen, heat and UV, so get the chlorine-resistant spandex type from the fabric supplier in writing, together with the method used to measure stretch and recovery.

Do I need certification for UV-protective swimwear?

To make a UV protection claim, first have the fabric's UV protection factor (UPF) tested; according to Hohenstein's factsheet, UV STANDARD 801 measures it on new fabric and after stretching, wetting, abrasion and washing. Under the European Commission's guidelines (5th edition, October 2025), a product designed and made with specific UV-protective properties is personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, and PPE is placed on the market with CE marking. This is current as of October 11, 2026. If you will sell in the EU, settle the conformity assessment route with a testing laboratory or a notified body, and confirm the current requirements with your importer and an expert.

Is swimwear in the same customs (HS) group as sportswear?

In İHKİB's sportswear export report, swimwear is not a separate group; the report tracks it together with sportswear under a heading that translates as “sports, ski and swimming garments”: knitted under customs heading 6112 and woven under 6211 of Turkey's tariff (GTİP). Its 2025 top ten includes women's and girls' knitted swimwear of synthetic fibers (6112.41) and men's and boys' woven swimwear of man-made fibers (6211.11). Confirm the full code for your product with your customs broker.
