Key facts

  • OEKO-TEX STeP certifies a production facility; ZDHC MRSL is a list of restricted substances and limit values for the chemical products used in a facility.
  • ZDHC MRSL conformance is shown at the level of the chemical product, so check what a washing plant’s document actually covers.
  • YKK states that aluminum-alloy teeth are not suited to jeans washing; for washed products, metal-tooth zippers and the semi-automatic jeans slider are recommended.

Guide to Denim Apparel

Denim apparel is the category of factories and CMT (cut, make, trim) workshops that make jeans, denim jackets, skirts, dresses and shirts. If you are looking for the fabric itself, see denim fabric suppliers. A denim order is usually three separate jobs: sewing, washing and trims. Settle at the start which of these the company does itself and which it subcontracts.

In jeans, the wash makes the look

Jeans get their final color, surface wear and handle from washing and finishing. The wash technique (stone, enzyme, ozone, laser) directly affects price and lead time (see denim washing techniques). Does the sewing factory wash in its own plant, or does it send the garments to a garment washing facility? In the second case there is one more link in the chain, and lead time, quality and environmental compliance depend on two companies being managed together.

Ask the washing plant for documents on chemical management and wastewater, and check what each document covers. OEKO-TEX STeP certifies a production facility. ZDHC MRSL is a list of restricted substances and limit values for the chemical products used in a facility, and conformance is shown at the level of the chemical product. Our certifications guide explains what each document proves.

Fabric and measurements: judge after the wash

Denim shrinks in the wash and its measurements change. Approve the measurement chart on the finished, post-wash measurements. If the same style is cut from different fabric lots, shade differences can appear; ask the company to record the fabric lot and the wash lot. Have the fabric weight (GSM), the elastane content and the fabric supplier written into the quote.

Trims must survive the wash

On washed denim products the zipper, rivets and buttons go through the process too. Our zipper guide recommends metal-tooth zippers and the semi-automatic jeans slider for washed products, and YKK states that aluminum-alloy teeth are not suited to jeans washing. Check on the sample how the color and function of each trim change after the wash.

Ask a denim manufacturer for the washed sample, the measurements and the lot

  • Which fabrics and wash types has it produced before? Ask for a washed sample and references.
  • Does it prepare the pre-wash and post-wash measurement charts itself, and does it suggest a tolerance for measurement loss?
  • Does it accept small orders? Ask for the minimum (MOQ) separately for the fabric lot and the wash lot.
  • Are the pattern and sampling rounds included in the price, or is the washed sample charged separately?

Jeans pricing: fabric weight, wash type and trims

Fabric weight and elastane content, the type and number of wash processes, pocket and stitching details, trims and order quantity set the price. For comparable quotes, ask for fabric, sewing, washing and trims as separate lines.

Frequently asked questions

Is washing included in the price of a denim order?

It depends on the company: some wash in their own plant, others send the garments to a contract washing facility. Ask for the 'sewing only (unwashed)' price and the 'washed finished garment' price on separate lines, and have the quote say who does the washing and how it affects the lead time.

Why should an approved washed sample be the reference?

Denim gets its color and worn look in the wash, and these can vary with the fabric lot. An approved washed sample becomes the reference for color, wear and measurements in bulk production. Have the wash recipe (which process is done in which order) recorded together with the sample.

What should I watch for with stretch denim?

In denim with elastane, post-wash measurements and stretch-recovery behave differently from non-stretch fabric. Ask for the shrinkage test results for the fabric lot and the measurement chart of the washed sample, and approve measurements on the finished, post-wash garment.
