Guide to Modest Clothing

Modest clothing (also modest fashion, Islamic clothing) is the English term for what Turkish trade calls tesettür giyim: covered-cut women's clothing. The category covers manufacturers of dresses, tunics, long coats (pardösü), ferace (a long outer garment), skirts, pants and jackets. If you are looking for hijab dresses or other hijab clothing, you are in the right place; the headscarf itself is a different product, and makers of scarves, shawls and hijab caps (bone) are in the separate scarves and hijabs category.
In sewing technique these products do not differ from general product groups such as dresses, jackets and pants, so also look at the company's experience in the specific product type: dress manufacturers for dresses and tunics, and suits and blazers for jackets and capes. Haşema (full-coverage modest swimwear) and beachwear are in swimwear and beachwear; a company that makes haşema can select modest clothing as well. For modest evening dresses, also see wedding and evening dresses; a company that makes them can select both categories.
What to check at sample approval
On covered-cut products, length, sleeve and hem width stand out in the measurement chart. Check the fabric's opacity (that it does not show through) and the need for lining on the sample, by holding it to the light and by wearing it, and describe your acceptance criterion in writing. On fluid fabrics such as chiffon, crepe and satin, drape and dimensional change after washing should be evaluated separately. Prefer a company that has sewn the same fabric before.
Style range and order structure
If you are launching a collection with many styles, try negotiating on the total order rather than a minimum per style; companies differ in how flexible they are on this. If you will use a custom color or printed fabric, ask separately for the fabric's own minimum. State in the request for quote how many styles, sizes and colors the collection will have, so that the company can judge its capacity accordingly.
Season and lead time
Work backwards from the season start date in your sales plan: add the sample rounds, the fabric lead time and the production time to the total lead time. Fix the final approval date before production starts in writing. Ask about the company's peak-season capacity and holiday closures in advance.
Embellishment and intermediate processes
Embroidery, stones, lace and pleating are separate operations. Does the workshop do the embroidery itself, or send it to an embroidery company? Ask where the outsourced work is done and how the lead time changes as a result.
Ask a modest clothing manufacturer about product experience, length and sleeve patterns, and fabric opacity
- Product experience: In which products (dress, tunic, long coat, ferace) has it produced? Ask for a similar sample and references.
- Pattern and grading: Who prepares the pattern for the length and sleeve options?
- Fabric: Who supplies the fabric? Are there results for opacity and for dimensional change after washing?
- Labels: If your target market is abroad, settle the label language and information early (labeling requirements).
In modest clothing, fabric consumption, lining and embellishment set the price
Fabric type and consumption (consumption is higher on long styles), the number of operations in the style, lining, embellishment, trims and quantity set the price. Settle in writing whether lining and embellishment are included in the quote or are separate items.

Frequently asked questions
How are length and sleeve measurements stated in a size chart for modest clothing?
State points such as length, sleeve length, hem width, slit and neckline opening for each size separately, with tolerances. Confirm with the pattern maker that these measurements are scaled proportionally across the size range, and check the sample measurements against the chart.
How do the Eid holidays affect lead time on a modest clothing order?
The dates of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) shift on the Gregorian calendar every year, and workshops may close during the holidays. At the quote stage ask for the company's closure periods and capacity calendar, and get written confirmation that the lead time does not clash with the dates in your sales plan.
How is fabric consumption calculated for long styles such as ferace and long coats?
Consumption rises directly with length and hem width. Ask for consumption per size, stated together with marker efficiency and wastage allowance; changes in fabric width also affect it. Ask which consumption assumption the quote uses.
