Guide to Garment Hangers and Packaging

Packaging and hangers are the first thing the customer sees of the product, and they are mostly set by the buyer's instruction. So clarifying the packing method before you go to a supplier is the first step to ordering the right size and quantity.

Scope: from hanger to carton

Garment hangers (plastic, wood, metal; clip types for pants and skirts) and garment packaging materials such as bags, cartons, boxes and tissue paper. Cardboard hang tags are under clothing labels. Companies that fold the product, bag it and place it in cartons are listed among ironing and packing workshops. Big bags (FIBC) and PP woven, mesh and jute sacks made for industrial load carrying are not on this page; they are under FIBC and PP woven bags.

The packing instruction decides the size

In export production, packing follows the buyer's instruction: the garment can be folded flat into a bag, boxed or shipped on a hanger (see the garment manufacturing process). Get this instruction before you go to a packaging supplier. Bag size follows the folded product, and carton size follows the number of pieces per carton and the carton layout.

Choosing hangers

The weight and shape of the product decide the hanger: shoulder hangers for shirts and T-shirts, clip hangers for pants and skirts, a sturdier body for heavy outerwear. Size (child or adult), shoulder slope, non-slip surface, color and logo print are part of the quote specification. If extra parts such as size dividers are needed, list them separately.

Ask a hanger and packaging supplier about minimums, freight and market rules

  • MOQ: the minimum can differ between stock sales in standard sizes and custom sizes, logos or printed bags.
  • Sampling: try the hanger and packaging with the real product; fit and carrying strength show up only that way.
  • Freight: hangers and cartons are bulky; add freight and storage cost to the unit price.
  • Market requirements: a retailer may ask for a warning or recycling mark on the bag. For products sold to the EU, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies as of this page's date; confirm your packaging's compliance with your buyer and a specialist.
  • Recycled content: if a company says its material is “recycled”, ask for documents; for the document types, see the textile certifications guide.

Packaging and hanger cost items

Material type and thickness, size, number of print colors, custom size or tooling, order quantity and freight.

Get the packing instruction in writing and test the hanger on the first lot

  • Get the packing instruction (bag, box or hanger; carton layout) in writing before the order.
  • Do not place a bulk order for hangers and bags without trying them on the first lot.

Frequently asked questions

How does shipping on hangers affect packaging and freight cost?

Shipping on hangers can take up more volume than a folded, bagged product, and the hanger is a separate cost item. Because the buyer's instruction sets the packing method, calculate the hanger, bag and freight costs at the quote stage according to that instruction.

How are bag and carton sizes determined?

They start from the folded product size and the number of pieces per carton. The carton layout also affects the size: a solid carton holds a single color and a single size, while a ratio carton holds different sizes of the same color in a set ratio. Make a sample pack with the real product before you finalize the size.

Is there a new EU rule on packaging for exports to Europe?

Yes. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Regulation (EU) 2025/40, entered into force on February 11, 2025 and has applied since August 12, 2026 (European Commission); some obligations, such as the recyclability requirements, start later (from 2030). This information is valid as of October 2026; confirm the regulation's effect on your packaging with your buyer and the current text, and consult a regulatory specialist if needed.

What do minimum quantity and price depend on for hangers, bags and cartons?

The minimum can differ between stock sales in standard sizes and custom sizes, logos or printed bags, so no single number applies. Price depends on the material type and thickness, size, number of print colors, custom size or tooling, and order quantity. Hangers and cartons are bulky, so calculate freight and storage cost alongside the unit price, and ask every supplier to quote the same size, material and print specification.

How should I plan lead time for hangers and packaging?

Get the buyer's packing instruction first; size and material can be finalized only after it. Delivery time can differ between stock items and a custom size or printed item made to order, so ask about both separately. Because you should try hangers and bags with the real product before a bulk order, add this trial round and the freight time to your lead time plan.
