Guide to Outerwear

The outerwear category covers companies that make padded jackets (mont in Turkish), coats, parkas, trench coats, quilted jackets, vests and raincoats. Leather and fur coats are outside the scope of this guide. For lined, structured tailored jackets made from classic fabric, see suits and blazers; for workwear with protective properties such as heat and flame or high visibility, see protective clothing. According to İHKİB, the Istanbul apparel exporters' association, outerwear exports were about US$187 million in January-September 2026, against about US$200 million in the same period a year earlier (İHKİB, October 2026, in Turkish). This is a dollar value of exports; it says nothing about how many pieces are produced.
A multi-layer product: shell, fill, lining
A padded jacket usually consists of a shell fabric, fill and lining. Have the quote state the type of fill (down, fiber and so on) and the amount in grams. On the sample, check that the quilting stitch keeps the fill in place. For lining, see lining fabrics suppliers.
Zippers and waterproofing
For thick outerwear fabric a higher-numbered (thicker) zipper is usually chosen; YKK offers sizes 8 and 10 in molded plastic, metal and coil zippers alike. Verify the size with a load test on the sample (see our zipper guide). On raincoats and water-repellent products, ask which test method and result the 'waterproof' claim rests on, and whether the seams are taped.
Volume, packing and season
Outerwear is bulky: fewer pieces fit in a carton, and the allowance for freight and storage rises. Settle the packing and hanger plan early (hangers and packaging). For winter collections, work backwards from the store season to set the production and shipping calendar; sourcing the fabric, fill and zippers can be the first item in the lead time.
Ask a jacket manufacturer about fill experience and quilting equipment
- Product experience: Has it made similar padded or water-repellent products before? Ask for a sample and references.
- Machines and workmanship: Does it have the equipment and skilled operators for quilting, seam taping, and the needles and machine settings that suit heavy fabric?
- Lead time: Who sources the fabric, fill and zippers, what is the stock position, and what is the lead time tied to?
- Quality control: At which stage are measurements, stitching, zipper function and fill distribution checked?
In outerwear, shell fabric, fill weight and bulk drive the price
The type of shell fabric and features such as lamination or coating, fill type and amount, lining, zippers and buttons, the number of operations in the style (hood, pockets, quilting pattern), the allowance for packing and freight caused by volume, and quantity set the price. Compare prices on the same fill weight and the same fabric specification.
Where are coat and jacket manufacturers in Turkey?
In the Industry Database of TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, 648 of the 832 firms with a valid capacity report for women's woven coats, raincoats and anoraks (product code 14.13.31) and 513 of the 790 for the equivalent men's code (14.13.21) are in Istanbul (October 2026). Knitted coats and jackets are counted under separate TOBB codes, so these figures show woven products only; they also include only manufacturers with a valid capacity report. Check each company's profile to see where it actually produces.

Frequently asked questions
Which items should be itemized in a jacket quote?
Shell fabric, fill (type and grams), lining, zippers and other trims, labor and packing should be requested as separate lines. That way two quotes can be compared line by line and you can see where a price difference comes from.
What should I ask for on waterproof outerwear?
A report showing the test method and result for the fabric's waterproofness or water repellency, and whether the seams are taped. A claim on the label or in the sales copy should be backed by a test report.
What should I ask a company about down-filled jackets?
Ask about the type and amount (in grams) of the fill, the source of the down and a document showing it, how the company checks for down escaping through seams and fabric, and the care instructions. Have this information written into the quote and the product specification.
What do the minimum order quantity and lead time on a jacket order depend on?
There is no industry-wide minimum or lead time for jackets; both vary by company and style. The shell fabric, fill, lining and zipper of a jacket are separate sourcing items, and each supplier's minimum and lead time can set the lower limit and the delivery date. Get the minimum per style, color and size, and what the lead time depends on (fabric, fill and zipper stock, sample rounds), in writing; for a winter collection, plan backwards from the shipping date.
