- GOTS as a rule involves an annual on-site inspection (GOTS 8.0).
- Verify a certification body's authorization for your standard and scope on the list kept by the organization that runs the standard.
Guide to Consulting and Certification

Textile consulting and certification firms do two different jobs: consultants prepare your facility for certification and audits, while certification bodies carry out the audit and issue the certificate. Telling them apart is the first step in choosing a firm.
Which certificates, audits and management systems are covered?
Covered: product and facility certificates such as OEKO-TEX, GOTS and GRS; cotton programs such as Better Cotton; social compliance audits (amfori BSCI, Sedex/SMETA); chemical management; and management systems such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, both preparation and certification. New obligations for sales into the EU call for separate expertise; the digital product passport article is one example. Measurement and analysis are the work of textile testing laboratories, lot inspection of quality control companies. Companies that sell chemicals or dyes are listed under textile chemicals and dyes, and companies that take in textile waste and recycle it under textile recycling; this page lists those that offer consulting and certification for chemical management and for recycled-content certificates such as GRS.
A consultant prepares you; they do not issue the certificate
A consultant sets up record keeping, finds gaps and prepares you for the audit. The certification decision belongs to the system's authorized body, so be wary of any guarantee.
Questions for the consultant and the certification body
- Experience: Which systems, and which facility types (sewing, wet processing, spinning, trading)? Can it share similar-sized references?
- Role: Who files the application? Will the consultant attend audit day and help you close audit findings?
- Deliverables: Are procedures, training, internal audits and record templates listed in writing?
- Authorization: If it is a certification body, is it authorized for the relevant standard and your scope? Verify the list with the body that runs the standard.
- Independence: If one firm offers both preparation consulting and certification, ask in writing how it separates the two and keeps its impartiality.
- Continuity: Does it support renewals and annual audit periods?
Consulting fees depend on the number of systems, site scope and preparation days
Price depends on the number of systems targeted, sites and employees, product and process variety (wet processing or many subcontractors widen the scope), the state of existing records, preparation and training days, and travel to the site. Certification or audit fees may not be included in the consulting fee, so ask for them as separate items. Costs vary by body and scope, so get written quotes from several firms.
Before hiring a consultant, find out which certificate and scope your buyer requires
Get in writing which certificate and scope the buyer requires; choosing the wrong system costs the most time and money. Compare the options in our textile certifications guide, and social audit preparation in the BSCI and Sedex article. Certificates need upkeep: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is valid for one year and STeP for three, and GOTS as a rule involves an annual on-site inspection. Plan renewals around your order lead times. Site visits add travel costs; the province filter lets you shortlist nearby firms. Versions and timelines change, so confirm current terms with the standard owner.

Frequently asked questions
Can a consultant guarantee that a factory will get certified?
No, the consultant does not make the certification decision. GOTS certificates are issued by certification bodies authorized by the standard owner, Global Standard gGmbH. For OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, the application goes to a member institute, which reviews the documents and samples, plans the testing and, if the results are favorable, issues the certificate. If a firm promises a “guarantee”, ask in writing who will issue the certificate and under what conditions it can be refused.
How do I verify that a certification body is authorized?
The authorization comes from the body that runs the standard, so check the list on its own website. GOTS 8.0 states that the current list of approved certification bodies and their scopes is published on the GOTS website; the scopes are divided into mechanical processing, wet processing, trading, and approval of colorants and textile auxiliaries. Make sure the body is authorized for the scope that fits your application.
Does a management system certificate such as ISO 9001 replace textile certificates?
No. ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) show that a management system has been set up. They do not document a product's organic or recycled content, harmful-substance testing or how the cotton was grown; for those you need the relevant system, such as OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS or Better Cotton.
What determines the fee for textile certification consulting?
The fee is set by quote and varies with scope: how many certificates or audit systems you are targeting, the number of sites and employees, factors that widen the scope such as wet processing or many subcontractors, the state of your existing records, preparation and training days, and travel costs for site visits. Certification or audit fees may not be included in the consulting fee, so ask for the two items separately and in writing. Because costs vary by firm and scope, get quotes from several firms.
How long do certification preparation and certification take?
There is no single answer. The time depends on the system you target, how ready the facility's record keeping is, the scope, and the certification body's audit calendar; closing audit findings can also extend it. Ask the consultant and the certification body for a written schedule, and plan backward from your buyer's delivery date. Put renewal dates in the schedule too: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificates are valid for one year and STeP for three, so confirm current terms with the standard owner.
