Key facts

  • This category covers screen printing inks (plastisol, water-based, discharge), pigment printing pastes, digital textile inks, and printing consumables such as DTF film and powder.
  • One plastisol maker's catalog (Avient, 2024) lists separate inks for cotton, polyester, poly-cotton and nylon, plus polyester series made to resist dye migration.
  • Digital ink class follows the fiber: reactive and acid inks need pretreatment, steaming and washing; disperse ink suits mainly polyester; pigment ink uses a binder on any fiber.
  • OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT is issued to chemical makers and distributors for one year; ZDHC Gateway lists MRSL levels 0 to 3, and Level 0 is only a self-declaration.
  • Pigment printing paste is in this category; separately sold thickener and binder go under textile chemicals and dyes, and a company selling both can choose both.

Guide to Textile Printing Inks

Textile printing inks cover the plastisol, water-based and discharge inks used in screen printing, pigment printing pastes, digital textile inks (reactive, pigment, disperse, DTG and DTF), and printing consumables such as DTF film and powder; this category lists companies in Turkey that sell them. Workshops that print for you are in textile printing. Companies that sell machines, screens, squeegees and presses are under textile printing machines; a dealer that also sells consumables can choose both.

Pigment printing paste belongs to this category. Dyes and pigments used in dyeing, and separately sold thickeners, binders and other printing auxiliaries, are in textile chemicals and dyes; a company that sells the paste together with these auxiliaries can choose both. Parent sector: Fibers, Dyes and Chemicals.

Choose printing ink by method and fabric

Screen printing. One plastisol maker's catalog lists separate inks for cotton, polyester, poly-cotton and nylon, with a mesh count, flash and cure temperature for each (Avient, 2024). The same catalog gives 160 °C (320 °F) as the standard cure temperature and as low as 121 °C (250 °F) for its low-cure series. On polyester the fabric dye can migrate into the print (dye migration), so separate series with high migration resistance are offered for this fabric. Name the ink family and the fabric in the quote.

Pigment paste. The paste consists of pigment, binder, thickener and auxiliaries and is fixed in the order print, dry, cure. Because rubbing fastness can be limited, ask for a fastness report and a sample (e-PG Pathshala).

Digital ink. In digital textile printing the ink class is chosen according to the fiber: reactive and acid inks require pretreated fabric and, after printing, steaming and washing; disperse ink (including sublimation) is used mainly on polyester, and pigment ink, with a binder, on every fiber (e-PG Pathshala). Particle size and viscosity affect the print head, so get the printer and print-head compatibility confirmed in writing.

DTF. The film, colored and white ink, and adhesive powder work together; press and post-processing steps vary with the film and powder manufacturer's instructions (Epson). Ask whether the film, ink and powder are compatible. More: DTF printing, textile printing methods.

Technical data sheet, safety data sheet and chemical certificates

Ask for the technical data sheet and the safety data sheet for every product. OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT is aimed at companies that produce or distribute chemicals, colorants and auxiliaries, and is issued for one year. The ZDHC Gateway shows chemical products with an MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substances List) conformance level from 0 to 3; Level 0 is only the supplier's own declaration. Check which product a certificate covers, its level and its validity date. One plastisol maker prints its ECO PASSPORT certificate numbers in its catalog (Avient, 2024); ask your supplier for the number too and look it up in the OEKO-TEX Label Check. For claims such as "PVC-free and phthalate-free," require a certificate or a test report with a defined scope. Certificate differences: certifications guide, OEKO-TEX.

Color, additives and packaging in the quote

  • Color: Is it a ready-made color, a mixing system or custom color matching? Have the custom color terms written down.
  • Additives: According to Avient, extender (a base that extends the ink) lowers opacity and performance; ask about the ratio and the manufacturer's approval.
  • Packaging and minimum: Have the pack size (kg, liters), minimum order and stock status written separately, along with the Incoterms rule the price is based on.

To meet suppliers in person, you can also visit InterDye & Textile Printing Eurasia at the Istanbul Expo Center. Its product groups include dyestuffs, pigments, textile chemicals, digital printing technologies and printing materials; dates are in our trade fair calendar.

Frequently asked questions

What are the minimum order and price for textile printing inks?

There is no reliable public minimum order or price range; both vary by company and product. When you compare quotes, keep the product family (plastisol, water-based, digital ink, DTF consumables), the fabric-specific formula, the color system and the pack size the same. Ready-made colors and custom color matching can have different minimums. Have the pack size (kg or liters), minimum order, custom color terms and stock status written separately in the quote, and check the minimum order information on the company profile.

Should I buy plastisol or water-based ink for screen printing?

It depends on the job; neither wins in every case. Plastisol stands out for opacity on dark fabric and for the film it forms on the surface, while water-based ink stands out for a thinner layer and a softer handle (per the screen printing glossary entry). Print samples of both families on your own fabric and compare them after washing, bearing in mind the handle and color you expect and the capacity of your dryer.

Which documents should I ask a printing ink supplier for?

Ask for a technical data sheet and a safety data sheet for each product. For chemical safety, ask for an OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT certificate or a ZDHC MRSL conformance level, and check which product it covers, its level and its validity date. At ZDHC, Level 0 is only the supplier's own declaration. Ask for the ECO PASSPORT number and look it up in the OEKO-TEX Label Check. If your own customer requires a particular certificate, follow that customer's specification first.

What should I check when buying DTF film, powder and ink from different companies?

Press temperature, time and finishing steps change with the film and powder manufacturer's instructions, so get written confirmation that the film, powder and ink work together. Print a sample on your own fabric and check it after washing. Durability depends on the film, powder, press conditions and care, so no single wash count can be given.
