Key facts

  • Nonwoven fabric is a roll material made by forming a web of fibers or filaments and bonding it, without weaving or knitting (EDANA).
  • SMS has a meltblown layer between two spunbond layers: spunbond gives strength, while the very fine-fiber meltblown layer provides the barrier and filtration function.
  • Nonwoven test methods are in the EN ISO 9073 series: mass per unit area is measured under EN ISO 9073-1 and strip tensile strength under EN ISO 9073-3.
  • To compare quotes given in different units, convert them: price per m² = price per kg × GSM ÷ 1,000.
  • According to TOBB capacity reports, 54 of 271 firms in nonwovens are in Gaziantep and 50 in Istanbul (October 2026).

Guide to Nonwovens

Nonwoven fabric is a roll material made by forming a web of fibers or filaments and bonding it, without weaving or knitting. This page lists companies in Turkey that make or sell nonwoven rolls by methods such as spunbond, SMS (a meltblown layer between two spunbond layers), meltblown, needle-punching and spunlace. In everyday Turkish, a plain spunbond sheet is sometimes called “tela” (the Turkish word for interlining); it is listed on this page. Fusible or sew-in interlining that holds the shape of a garment is under interlinings.

Finished products are outside this category. Baby diapers and wet wipes, which are consumer hygiene products, are not covered by this guide; this page lists only companies that make and sell nonwoven rolls. For face masks and surgical drapes see medical textiles, and for filter media and filter felt see industrial filter fabrics. Padding (vatka in Turkish trade) is two different products: shoulder pads (a garment trim) belong under interlinings, while roll, fiber or quilted wadding is listed on this page. For loose fill fiber (fiberfill) and polyester staple fiber (PSF), see textile fibers. Woven and knitted surfaces are under fabrics, and performance-oriented woven and coated products under technical fabrics.

Specify method, basis weight and finish in a nonwoven inquiry

A nonwoven cannot be defined by its name alone: two surfaces of the same GSM can differ greatly in handle and strength depending on the bonding method. Put the following in your inquiry:

  • Method and raw material: spunbond or needle-punched; polypropylene, polyester, viscose or a blend
  • Weight (GSM) and tolerance, net width, roll length and core diameter
  • Finishing: hydrophilic, antistatic, flame-retardant, UV-resistant, color
  • End use and the test reports you need

Ask a nonwoven supplier about line, lot and roll records

  • Producer or converter? Does the company make the web on its own line, or does it slit, laminate or make up ready rolls? Either can suit you, but lead time and responsibility differ.
  • Minimum order (MOQ): It depends on the production run and roll structure, and usually rises for colored and specially finished products. There is no fixed industry value; ask for it in writing in the quote.
  • Lead time: Is the product available from stock, or does it go into line planning?
  • Sampling: Keep a catalog sample separate from a sample taken from a production roll.
  • Quality control and documents: Ask for a lot number on the roll and a measurement record for each lot. Nonwoven test methods are defined in the EN ISO 9073 series; for example, mass per unit area is measured under EN ISO 9073-1 and strip tensile strength under EN ISO 9073-3. The certificates you need depend on the end use; hygiene and medical applications add further requirements.

Polymer, basis weight and production line set nonwoven price

Polymer raw material price, GSM and width, the line and energy cost of the method, finishing and color, order size, and packaging and freight set the price. A low GSM looks cheaper per m² but also lowers strength. Compare quotes in the same unit, at the same GSM and on the same delivery terms (Incoterms).

Converters, producers and where to look

For small quantities, companies that cut or convert rolls can be more flexible, while buying from a primary producer usually depends on line planning. There are two regional indicators. The Textile, Leather and Clothing Industry Specialized Commission Report prepared for the Ninth Development Plan (2007–2013) names Gaziantep as a polypropylene and nonwoven cluster (State Planning Organization, in Turkish); that is an assessment of roughly twenty years ago. The more current one is the TOBB Industry Database: the 271 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for nonwovens (product code 13.95) are spread across 42 provinces, led by Gaziantep (54 firms) and Istanbul (50) (TOBB, October 2026). Gaziantep is still first but not the only center; Izmir (25), Tekirdag (22) and Denizli (20) also appear. The code also covers articles made of nonwovens, and it counts only manufacturers that hold a capacity report. To see companies that suit your logistics, use the province filter.

Frequently asked questions

What is SMS nonwoven, and how does it differ from spunbond?

SMS is a multilayer structure with a meltblown layer between two spunbond layers. The spunbond layers give the structure its strength; the very fine-fiber meltblown layer provides the barrier and filtration function but is weak on its own. If the application needs strength rather than a barrier, single-layer spunbond is often enough.

How do I compare nonwoven prices quoted per kilogram and per square meter?

Convert both to the same unit: price per m² = price per kg × GSM ÷ 1,000. Also check the GSM tolerance in each quote; a deviation within tolerance changes the unit price directly.

Will bulk production match the approved sample?

Small variations between lots are possible even under the same product code. Write the GSM, width and tensile strength values of the approved sample, with their tolerances, into the purchase order, and check each incoming lot against them.
