List your company for freeSewing thread is the mostly plied and twisted yarn that joins garment panels, finishes edges and decorates seams, sold on spools and cones. This category lists sewing thread manufacturers and suppliers in Turkey that make and sell sewing, overlock and embroidery thread. Cone yarn for knitting and weaving, and hand-knitting yarn, belong to the yarn sector (cotton yarn, polyester yarn); a company making both can appear in both categories. Embroidery workshops are listed under embroidery; trims such as buttons, zippers and labels are in the trims and accessories sector.
Four constructions stand out in manufacturers' catalogs for apparel. The properties are the manufacturers' own claims, so confirm with a sample seam.
| Construction | Properties and use, according to manufacturers |
|---|---|
| Core-spun (multifilament core, mostly polyester, wrapped in polyester or cotton fibers) | Substantially higher tear and abrasion resistance than spun staple-fiber thread; denim, workwear, shirts, trousers |
| Continuous filament | High tear resistance, shiny appearance; closing and decorative seams |
| Textured filament (crimped, bulky) | Soft, dense seams; overlock and coverstitch |
| Mercerized combed cotton | Suitable for garment dyeing; closing and overlock seams |
If the garment will be dyed after sewing, the thread has to take the same shade (see dye houses).
Thread thickness is usually quoted as a Tkt (ticket) number. According to Amann, this is a commercial designation: it does not give the actual linear density, no standard makes it mandatory, and other systems are used, particularly in Asia. In the system common in Europe, the Tkt of synthetic sewing thread is three times the final Nm: Nm 120/3 and Nm 80/2 both have a final Nm of 40, so both are Tkt 120. The same number can still mean different thicknesses: in one manufacturer's catalog, a polyester type at Tkt 120 is 250 dtex and an elastic (PBT) type is 380 dtex. Have the quote state Tex or Nm, the number of plies and the fiber type next to the Tkt (see the yarn count conversion guide). The same catalog recommends needle sizes 70-80 (Nm) for Tkt 120 and 110-130 for Tkt 30, so check the thread against your shop's needles and machines (sewing machine suppliers).
Work out the quantity from the seam length. In Coats' example, an average knit T-shirt takes about 68 m of thread, or about 78 m with a 15% waste allowance. Multiply by your order quantity and divide by the cone length; if the needle and looper threads differ, calculate them separately. Compare price per meter, not per cone: one manufacturer's catalog offers the same number in 1,000 m and 5,000 m cones.
In the Industry Database of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), 27 of the 62 firms with a valid capacity report for sewing thread of synthetic and artificial filaments and fibers (code 13.10.85) are in Istanbul, followed by Tekirdağ (8), Bursa (6) and Gaziantep (6) (October 2026). The province is that of the production facility the report covers, and the count includes only manufacturers that hold a capacity report; firms that only sell imported thread and cotton sewing thread (a separate code) are not counted.
Tkt (ticket) is a commercial number for the thickness of sewing and embroidery thread; the higher the number, the finer the thread. In the system common in Europe, the Tkt of synthetic sewing thread is three times its final Nm: Nm 120/3 and Nm 80/2 both give Tkt 120. Because Tkt is not a standard, have the quote also state Tex or Nm, the number of plies and the fiber type.
There is no official or shared data on minimums; they vary by company. Price is affected by the thread construction (core-spun, filament, textured, cotton), thickness and number of plies, extra treatments such as water repellency, whether the color is on a swatch card or custom-dyed, cone length and quantity. Ask for the minimum per cone or carton and per color, ask about custom colors separately, and request quotes on the same Tkt, construction and color.
It depends on the stitch type and the garment. In Coats' ratio method, the seam length is multiplied by the ratio for the stitch type (2.5 for lockstitch 301; 14 for three-thread overlock 504; the ratios assume 7 stitches per cm, about 18 per inch), and 10-15% is added for waste depending on shop conditions. In the same source's example, an average knit T-shirt takes about 68 m, or about 78 m with waste; before waste, about 21 m of that is needle thread and 47 m is looper thread. Measure actual consumption on your own machines and fabric.
One manufacturer's catalog highlights textured filament thread for overlock and coverstitch seams and says it gives soft, dense edge coverage. The same catalog also lists core-spun and cotton threads for overlock. Which one suits your product is decided by a sample seam with your fabric, needle and looper settings.
