Key facts

  • Per Cotton Incorporated, ring-spun yarn is the strongest, finest and softest but costs the most and is the least even; open-end is more even and cheaper, with a harder handle.
  • Combing removes short fibers, so it improves evenness, softness and strength; it is often chosen for fine counts (Cotton Incorporated, ISP 1006).
  • For knitting the yarn should be soft, low-twist and even; a woven warp needs strong, even, low-hairiness yarn (Cotton Incorporated, ISP 1006).
  • Ne 30/1 cotton yarn is about 50,800 m per kilogram, so compare quotes for different counts by cost per meter, not by price per kilogram.
  • Under GOTS, a yarn company's scope certificate is not enough on its own; the transaction certificate (TC) for the shipment is also required (Global Standard gGmbH).

Guide to Cotton Yarn

Two decisions change the handle and the price of fabric most when you buy cotton yarn: the system in which the yarn is spun, and whether it is combed. Count, ply and color come after these two.

Spinning system and combing

Cotton Incorporated's technical bulletin (ISP 1006) summarizes the systems this way. Ring-spun yarn is the strongest, finest and softest, but also the most expensive and the least even. Open-end (rotor) yarn is more even, has fewer imperfections and costs less; on the other hand its handle is harder and it is limited to coarse counts. Vortex spinning gives an appearance closer to ring-spun yarn, while compact spinning reduces the hairiness of ring-spun yarn. Combing removes short fibers, so it improves evenness, softness and strength; it is often chosen for fine counts. In Turkish quotations, combed yarn is called penye and carded yarn karde. To decide between them, see combed, carded and open-end yarn compared.

Knitting or weaving?

The same count does not behave the same way in the two uses. For knitting the yarn should be soft, low-twist and even; high torque distorts the fabric and thick places break needles. For weaving the warp yarn should be strong, even and low in hairiness, while the weft yarn can have less twist (ISP 1006). So tell the supplier where the yarn will be used.

Cotton group, quality report and BCI claim: what to ask a supplier

  • The cotton: spinners group bales by fiber fineness (micronaire), strength, length, trash content, color and growing region (ISP 1006). Ask which cotton group is used and whether the mix stays constant between lots. Companies that sell the baled cotton itself are not on this page; they are in the textile fibers category.
  • Quality report: ask for lot-based measurements of unevenness, imperfections, hairiness and strength.
  • BCI Cotton (formerly Better Cotton) claim: this is a farm-level standard and does not mean organic. Ask whether the cotton is sourced physically or under the mass balance model; the claim you can make on your product depends on it. For details, see the textile certifications guide.
  • Blend requirement: see also the blended yarn page, which lists compositions such as cotton-polyester separately.

Compare counts by cost per meter, not price per kilogram

Cotton yarn is sold by the kilogram, but comparing two counts by price per kilogram is misleading. Ne 30/1 yarn is about 50,800 m per kilogram; convert quotes for different counts to cost per meter before comparing them. For the effects of raw cotton, energy and exchange rates, see what drives yarn prices.

Where are cotton yarn manufacturers in Turkey?

Of the 320 firms with a valid capacity report for cotton yarn (product code 13.10.61, excluding sewing thread) in the Industry Database of TOBB (the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey), 56 are in Kahramanmaraş, 51 in Gaziantep and 29 in Denizli (October 2026). The firms are spread across 36 provinces; Uşak (26) and Tekirdağ (24) follow. The data show only manufacturers holding a capacity report; intermediary sellers are not counted. The State Planning Organization's 2007 specialization commission report (in Turkish) had named Kahramanmaraş as a cotton yarn cluster, especially for open-end yarn; Kahramanmaraş is also first in the current records, but its share is under one-fifth. Ask in the quote whether the seller is an intermediary or a spinning mill, and in which mill the yarn is spun.

Where sewing thread and regenerated yarn are listed

Thread sold on spools or cones for sewing in garment making is listed under sewing thread. Open-end yarn spun from fiber recovered from waste (regenerated yarn) is sought on this page; companies that open waste and scraps to recover fiber are listed under textile recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Is the same cotton yarn used for knitting and weaving?

Mostly not. Knitting calls for a soft, low-twist, even yarn, while a woven warp needs high strength and low hairiness. Two yarns of the same count can be made with different twist and spinning systems. State on the quote where the yarn will be used (knitting, warp or weft).

What lines should a cotton yarn quote contain?

Count and ply with the name of the system (for example Ne 30/1), spinning system (ring, open-end, vortex), carded or combed, raw, dyed or melange, price per kilogram with the currency (USD or EUR) and Incoterm, packing, lead time and payment terms. The accepted count tolerance should also be written into the specification.

How can I verify that organic cotton yarn is really organic?

Ask the seller for a valid organic certificate and its scope. Under GOTS, the scope certificate of the yarn company is not enough on its own; the transaction certificate (TC) issued by the certification body for the shipment concerned is also required. Do not buy yarn without a certificate as organic.

In which provinces are cotton yarn manufacturers in Turkey?

Of the 320 firms with a valid capacity report in the TOBB (Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey) Industry Database for cotton yarn (product code 13.10.61, excluding sewing thread), 56 are in Kahramanmaraş, 51 in Gaziantep and 29 in Denizli (October 2026). The firms are spread across 36 provinces and the top province's share is 17.5%; in other words, cotton yarn is not concentrated in a single province. The data cover only manufacturers holding a capacity report. Also ask where the quoting firm's spinning mill is located and what the transit time will be.
