Key facts

  • A zipper number is a size class, not a millimeter value: in one manufacturer's catalog, a No. 5 coil zipper falls in the 5.5–7.0 mm band.
  • Five decisions define a zipper: tooth type, end type (closed-end or open-end), size number, length and slider type; write the number with the tooth width in millimeters.
  • According to one manufacturer's catalog, aluminum alloy teeth are not suited to jeans washing and re-dyeing; the same manufacturer's jeans slider is semi-automatic locking.
  • As of October 2026, the EU (REACH Annex XVII) and Turkey (KKDİK Annex-17) both limit nickel release from parts in direct, prolonged skin contact to 0.5 µg/cm² per week under entry 27.
  • In TOBB's classification, zippers share a code with buttons and snaps (32.99.23); 137 of the 165 firms with a valid capacity report under it are in Istanbul (October 2026).

Guide to Zippers

A short specification such as “No. 5, 18 cm” is not enough in a zipper order, because the same number can have a different tooth width depending on the manufacturer. Below are the decisions to make before you request a quote and the questions to put to zipper companies.

Scope: zipper types and sliders

Metal, coil, molded plastic (injection-molded, called kemik in Turkish trade) and invisible zippers used in clothing, plus sliders and zipper tape. Attaching the zipper to the garment is the job of CMT sewing workshops, not of the companies on this page. For other closures such as buttons and snaps, and for metal trims, see the buttons and metal trims page.

In TOBB's product classification, zippers share a code with buttons and snap fasteners (32.99.23); 137 of the 165 firms with a valid capacity report under that code are in Istanbul (October 2026). Because the code also covers buttons, the figure does not show zipper makers alone. The classification and the database belong to TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye.

Five decisions define a zipper: teeth, end type, size, length and slider

Five decisions define a zipper: tooth type, end type (closed-end or open-end), size number, length and slider type. The size number and the length cause the most confusion. Write the size number together with the tooth width in millimeters. For length, state the measuring method, the top and bottom tape allowances and the tolerance; sources may start the measurement from different points. Each decision is explained in detail in zipper types and numbers.

Ask a zipper company about sliders, color matching and nickel

  • How it sells: ready-length zippers, or chain and sliders supplied separately? Who handles custom lengths and technical changes?
  • Color matching: is the tape dyed to your fabric sample, or chosen from a ready color card? Ask how they hold the same shade on a second order.
  • Slider and washing: if the product will be stone-washed or garment-dyed, are the slider type and tooth material suitable for that process?
  • Nickel: is there a nickel-free or anti-nickel option, and is a test report provided?
  • Sample and lead time: will the bulk come from the same product code as the approved sample? Is the lead time different for stock items and for custom colors or logo sliders?

Tooth type, size number and length set the zipper price

Tooth type and size number, length, slider type and plating, tape material and color, custom color or logo slider, and order quantity. When you compare, make sure you gave every company the same tooth type, size number and length.

Check the incoming lot

Add zippers to your quality plan: opening and closing, slider lock and length are checked. In commonly used defect lists, a broken or jammed zipper is classed as a major defect; the buyer's defect list sets the classes (see our AQL inspection guide). For nickel on zippers with metal parts, you can get a report from textile testing laboratories.

Frequently asked questions

Why can two quotes for the same zipper number not be compared?

Because the number is a size class, not a millimeter value. In one manufacturer's catalog a No. 5 coil zipper falls in the 5.5–7.0 mm band, and the sizes called “tip” in Turkey may follow a different scale. Slider type, tape material and the length measuring method also change the price. Compare quotes only when the tooth type, tooth width in millimeters, length and slider specification are the same.

What should I look for when choosing a zipper for jeans or washed products?

The tooth material and the slider. According to one zipper manufacturer's catalog, aluminum alloy teeth are sensitive to moisture, friction and acidic or alkaline environments, so they are not suited to harsh processes such as jeans washing and re-dyeing. The same manufacturer's jeans slider is semi-automatic locking. Test the zipper you choose on a sample that goes through the wash process together with the product.

What should I ask a zipper supplier for on nickel?

As of October 2026, entry 27 of REACH Annex XVII in the EU and of Annex-17 of Turkey's KKDİK Regulation limits nickel release from parts in direct and prolonged contact with the skin to 0.5 µg per cm² per week; garment zippers are on the list of examples. Ask the supplier for a test report made to EN 1811, or for a nickel-free option, and check that the report covers the slider as well as the teeth. For the current requirement, consult your test laboratory and expert.

What do zipper minimums, lead times and prices depend on?

Minimum quantity and lead time are set separately for ready-length stock zippers and for custom colors, custom lengths or logo sliders, so quoting a single number would be misleading. Price depends on tooth type and size number, length, slider type and plating, tape material and color, custom color or logo slider, and order quantity. Ask how the company will match the shade on a second order, and ask separately for the lead time from stock and from production.

In which provinces are zipper companies located in Turkey?

In TOBB's product classification, zippers share a code with buttons and snap fasteners (32.99.23). Of the 165 firms with a valid capacity report under that code, 137 are in Istanbul (October 2026). Because the code also covers buttons, the figure does not show zipper makers alone, and a province breakdown specific to zippers cannot be drawn from this source.
