Guide to Ironing and Packing

Ironing and packing is the finishing stage that gets sewn goods ready for shipment or sale: thread trimming, ironing (pressing), final check, label and barcode attaching, folding, polybagging, hanging and cartoning. It can be done inside the sewing workshop or in a separate workshop. For sewing, see CMT sewing; for polybag, carton and hanger suppliers, see garment hangers and packaging. All production services are together under contract workshops and services.

What does the service include?

According to the T-shirt sewing module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB), the aim of ironing is to remove the creases and folds formed during production, set the seams and improve the appearance. The final check covers three things: shape (how the garment hangs), measurements and conformity of materials. The garment is then folded or hung and cartoned as the buyer's instructions say (Sarkar, 2016). Ask which steps are in the price.

Ask the ironing and packing workshop about surfaces, carton plan and capacity

  • Fabric and surface experience: What heat and steam settings does it use on thin or slippery fabric and on printed or heat-sensitive surfaces? Have a trial piece ironed first.
  • Measurement check: Does it measure against the size chart after ironing?
  • Flow of defective pieces: Where does a sewing defect found at this stage go, who corrects it and how are the corrected pieces counted?
  • Labels and extras: Does it attach price labels, barcodes and hanger tags? Who supplies the materials?
  • Carton plan: Can it prepare solid packs (one color and one size per carton) or ratio packs (one color per carton with sizes in a set ratio, for example S:M:L:XL = 5:7:7:5)? Carton contents should be verified by count against the order breakdown and the shipping document.
  • Capacity and lead time: Ironing and packing come right before shipment, and a delay here goes straight into the ship date. Ask for daily capacity and a plan counted back from the ship date.

Ironing and packing price depends on product type, packing style and labeling work

The product type and ironing time (a shirt and a T-shirt do not take the same workload), the packing style (flat fold, hanger, boxed), label and barcode work, who supplies the materials and lot size set the price. Ask for ironing, folding and packing as separate lines in the quote; our guide to CMT T-shirt sewing prices shows how to compare quotes item by item.

Give packing instructions with photos, and plan inspection and transport

Give the packing instructions in writing and with pictures. If you also want a quality check at this stage, set the sampling plan and defect classes beforehand; quality control companies can help. If pieces will be moved from the sewing workshop to the ironing and packing workshop, leave room in the calendar for transport and counting. For the stages before finishing, read the garment manufacturing process.

Frequently asked questions

Should I give ironing and packing to the sewing workshop or to a separate one?

Both are possible. If the sewing workshop does this job in-house, the pieces are not moved and counted one more time. If you work with a separate workshop, agree in writing which workshop a sewing defect found at this stage goes back to, the count record and the transport time in between.

Can the garment's measurements change during ironing?

Yes. The T-shirt sewing module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) lists fabric gathering or shrinking under steam in the iron, and sewing thread that shrinks under the iron, among the sources of measurement deviation; on knit fabric, too much steam can also cause stretching. Heat and steam must be set for the fabric, and measurements checked after ironing.

What packing instructions should I give the workshop?

The fold style (polybag, box or hanger) and size, label and barcode positions, polybag and carton type, pieces per carton and the color-size distribution, and a carton label example. Send a photographed sample pack if you can; without instructions, the workshop packs by its own habit.

What determines the price of ironing and packing?

The product type and ironing time (a shirt and a T-shirt do not take the same workload), the packing style (flat fold, hanger, boxed), label and barcode work, who supplies the materials and lot size set the price. Ask for ironing, folding and packing as separate lines in the quote; if the quote does not state which line is included in the price, quotes cannot be compared with each other.

How long does ironing and packing take, and how does it affect the ship date?

The time depends on the workshop's daily capacity, the product type, the packing style and extra jobs such as labels and barcodes. Because ironing and packing come right before shipment, a delay here goes straight into the ship date. Ask for the daily capacity and for a plan counted back from the ship date; if the pieces will be moved from the sewing line to a separate workshop, add transport and counting time.
