Guide to Clothing Labels

A label is both the garment's brand and its carrier of information, so a label order depends on the accuracy of the content as much as on design. Correcting a wrongly printed label can mean removing and relabeling pieces before shipment. Below are the label types, what to ask the company and what makes up the price.

Label types

  • Woven labels: mostly used as brand and main labels.
  • Woven patches and jacquard labels: woven patches (arma in Turkish trade) and jacquard-woven labels are in this category. For embroidered patches, see embroidery workshops.
  • Printed labels: care, content and size labels that carry more text.
  • Hang tags and barcoded tags: carry store and tracking information. Cardboard hang tags belong in this category; garment hangers are under garment hangers and packaging.

Packaging labels such as roll labels, self-adhesive thermal and barcode labels, and sleeve labels fitted over product packaging are outside this category; a barcoded hang tag attached to the garment is on this page.

Companies that sew or attach labels are not on this page; look under CMT sewing and ironing and packing.

If you are looking for a factory to make clothing under your own brand name, that is private label manufacturing, covered in our private label clothing guide. This page lists the companies that make the labels themselves.

Of the 173 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for textile labels and badges (code 13.96.17.50, excluding embroidered ones), 141 are in Istanbul, followed by Denizli (12) and Bursa (6) (October 2026). The code covers only labels made of textile materials, so cardboard hang tags and paper labels are not counted. TOBB stands for the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye.

Who prepares the label content?

The label company mostly prints the text you supply, so you must verify the content beforehand. At quality control, fiber composition, country of origin, manufacturer or importer details, size and care instructions are checked and barcodes are scanned (see our AQL inspection guide). Mandatory information varies by market; for details, see mandatory information on clothing labels.

Ask a label company about proofs, versions and wash tests

  • Print proof: do not start bulk printing without written approval; spelling, symbols and color are checked on the proof.
  • Minimum order and number of versions: each size, language or color can be a separate version. Ask whether the minimum applies per version or in total.
  • Lead time: get the lead time for the first order and for reorders separately; for label types that need set-up, the first order can take longer.
  • Edges and softness: depending on the cut, the label edge can stay stiff, so ask about edge finishing. For underwear, baby and children's clothing, choose labels and positions that will not be uncomfortable against the skin.
  • Wash resistance: a printed care label must stay legible after washing; ask for a wash test.

Label type, size, print colors and versions set the price

Label type and size, number of colors and prints, edge and folding style, number of versions and order quantity. Also ask whether the first order carries a design or set-up fee.

To get the order right

  • Show the label position (back neck, side seam, waist) with a drawing in the tech pack.
  • If you sell to more than one market, list the languages and the symbol set up front.
  • Check the labels on sample garments before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose woven or printed labels?

For a brand label or logo, a woven label gives a lasting look but can be limited for very fine text. A printed label can be more legible when the label carries a lot of information, such as care, content and size. The amount of information the label must carry decides the choice.

Who approves the label print proof?

The proof is final when the ordering party approves it in writing. The label company mostly prints the text it is given, so a spelling mistake, missing information or a wrong symbol should be caught by you before bulk printing.

Which standard are care symbols based on?

The international symbol system used on care labels is defined in ISO 3758; the current edition is ISO 3758:2023. The standard covers symbols for domestic washing, bleaching, drying and ironing, and for professional cleaning. Your sales market may have additional mandatory information or format requirements; see our article on mandatory information on clothing labels.

What do label minimum order quantity and lead time depend on?

They depend on the label type, size, number of print colors and number of versions; each size, language or color can be a separate version. Ask whether the minimum applies per version or in total. Get the lead time for the first order and for reorders separately, because label types that need set-up can take longer on the first order. Also ask whether the first order carries a design or set-up fee.

In which provinces are label manufacturers located in Turkey?

Of the 173 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for textile labels and badges (code 13.96.17.50, excluding embroidered ones), 141 are in Istanbul, followed by Denizli (12 firms) and Bursa (6 firms) (October 2026). The code excludes embroidered items and labels made of non-textile materials, so embroidered patches, cardboard hang tags and paper labels are not counted.
