- Polyester yarn covers two products: continuous filament yarn and yarn spun from staple fiber; say which one you mean when you ask for a quote.
- Filament yarn is usually specified in denier or dtex, staple-fiber yarn in Ne or Nm (Cotton Incorporated, TRI 1014; Turkish Ministry of National Education, 2014).
- POY is an intermediate product that usually goes on to texturing; DTY is POY drawn and textured; FDY is fully drawn during spinning and needs no further processing (Oerlikon Barmag).
- Differences in dye uptake between yarns can show up in the fabric as repeating stripes (barré; Cotton Incorporated, TRI 1002).
- Under GRS 5.0 the standard applies to products with at least 20% recycled content; a product-specific GRS label requires at least 50% (Textile Exchange).
Guide to Polyester Yarn

When you ask for a quote, first say which polyester yarn you mean; this heading covers two different products. The first is continuous filament yarn: it is made of long, unbroken filaments and is smooth. The second is yarn spun from staple fiber: it is twisted from short fibers, like cotton, and is mostly blended with cotton or viscose. Filament yarn is usually specified in denier or dtex, and staple-fiber yarn in Ne or Nm (Cotton Incorporated, TRI 1014; Turkish Ministry of National Education, 2014).
Filament types: POY, DTY, FDY
Three abbreviations come up often on the market:
- POY (partially oriented yarn): an intermediate product that usually goes on to texturing after spinning; it is not normally expected to be made into fabric directly.
- DTY (drawn textured yarn): made by drawing and texturing POY; the crimp it gains gives it bulk and stretch. It is widely used in knitting and weaving.
- FDY (fully drawn yarn): drawing is completed during spinning, so it is made into fabric without further processing. Manufacturer documents mention it for fabrics that should fall smoothly or have a slippery surface.
The type you choose sets the look and the stretch of the fabric. Asking for a quote for “polyester yarn” without naming the type is the quickest way to get a price for the wrong product.
Specification, color and documents: what to ask a polyester yarn supplier
- Specification: type, total denier (or dtex), number of filaments and luster (bright, semi-dull, dull).
- Color: is it raw, dyed or spin-dyed? For dyed yarn, ask how many dye lots the order will come from; the shade can drift between lots.
- Differences in dye uptake: differences in dye uptake between yarns can show up in the fabric as repeating stripes (barré; Cotton Incorporated, TRI 1002). Knit the first sample from several cones of the same lot and have it dyed.
- Recycled yarn: the documents and the percentage. For the advantages and limits, see recycled polyester and cotton.
- Staple-fiber yarn: fiber fineness, cut length and blend ratio. Cotton blends are listed separately on the blended yarn page. Companies that sell polyester staple fiber (PSF) in loose form are not on this page; they are in the textile fibers category.
Where are polyester yarn manufacturers in Turkey?
Of the 77 firms with a valid capacity report for folded or cabled polyester filament yarn (product code 13.10.81.10.02) in the Industry Database of TOBB (the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey), 44 are in Gaziantep, while Bursa (18 firms) and Kahramanmaraş (14) lead the man-made (synthetic and artificial) fiber manufacturing code (20.60), which besides polyester also covers polyamide, polypropylene and viscose filament as well as staple fiber (October 2026). Producers without a capacity report fall outside these numbers. An older source, the State Planning Organization's 2007 specialization commission report (in Turkish), links Bursa to its history in silk and names it as a cluster for synthetic filament yarn and fabric; this is an assessment of about twenty years ago. Narrow down current suppliers with the province filter.
Sewing thread is a separate category
Polyester sewing, overlock and embroidery thread sold on spools or cones is listed under sewing thread. A company that makes both industrial yarn for knitting and weaving and sewing thread can select both categories.
Raw material, extra processing and denier set the price of polyester yarn
Virgin polyester is a petrochemical raw material, so the price of the raw material, energy costs and exchange rates are reflected in the quote. Extra processes such as texturing and dyeing, fine deniers and special cross-sections, and certified recycled input separate the prices. The polyester glossary entry summarizes the fiber's properties and uses.

Frequently asked questions
What is spin-dyed polyester yarn?
Yarn in which the color is added before the fiber is formed, as pigment in the polymer melt. Because the color is inside the fiber, a separate dyeing stage is generally not needed. The colors offered and the minimum lot size vary by supplier; ask for a color card or a color sample to check the shade.
What documents should I ask for with recycled polyester yarn?
A certificate issued under a recycled-content standard such as GRS or RCS, and the transaction certificate (TC) for the shipment concerned. Under GRS 5.0 the standard applies to products with at least 20% recycled content; a product-specific GRS label requires at least 50%. Ask in writing for the recycled percentage and the source of the raw material (for example PET bottles or textile waste).
Is polyester yarn count written like cotton yarn count?
Not always. Filament yarn is usually given in denier or dtex, and the higher the number, the thicker the yarn. Staple-fiber polyester yarn can be written in Ne or Nm, as with cotton, and the higher the number, the finer the yarn. Have the name of the system written on the quote.
In which provinces are polyester yarn manufacturers in Turkey?
Of the 77 firms with a valid capacity report in the TOBB (Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey) Industry Database for folded or cabled polyester filament yarn (product code 13.10.81.10.02), 44 are in Gaziantep. Bursa (18 firms) and Kahramanmaraş (14) lead the man-made (synthetic and artificial) fiber manufacturing code (20.60) (October 2026). Code 20.60 is not specific to polyester; it also covers polyamide, polypropylene and viscose filament as well as staple fiber. The data cover only manufacturers holding a capacity report; ask in the quote which type of yarn (POY, DTY, FDY or staple fiber) the firm actually works with.
What do the minimum order, price and lead time for polyester yarn depend on?
There is no industry-wide figure for minimum quantity or lead time; both vary by supplier and by the yarn specification. Undyed yarn in a type, denier, filament count and luster that the supplier keeps in stock can usually be bought in smaller quantities and faster. Dyed yarn is planned by dye lot, and spin-dyed yarn by color changes on the spinning line, so ask for the minimum per color. Price reflects raw material, energy and exchange rates, plus extra processing such as texturing and dyeing, fine deniers, special cross-sections and certified recycled input. In writing, get the unit, the minimum per color and whether the lead time starts at sample approval or at the order.
