- The pattern-making course of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) lists the work as measuring, drafting, preparing templates, grading and calculating main and secondary materials.
- Grading means enlarging or reducing the checked and approved base-size pattern to the other sizes according to the size chart.
- Turkey's MEB T-shirt pattern module requires the base pattern to be checked and made error-free before grading, because a mistake in the base pattern is carried into every size.
- Once the base-size pattern is approved, fit between sizes is checked with a size set sample (Sarkar, 2011).
Guide to Pattern Making

Pattern making and the pattern room (modelhane in Turkish) turn a drawing and size chart into pieces that can be cut. This category lists companies that make patterns, grade them across sizes and run pattern rooms. For studios that design the product, see fashion design studios; for first-garment sewing, see garment sampling. Pattern rooms are the pre-production link of the contract workshops and services chain.
What does the pattern stage cover?
The pattern-making course of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) lists the work as taking measurements, drafting the pattern, preparing templates, grading and calculating main and secondary materials. Grading means enlarging or reducing the checked and approved base-size pattern to the other sizes according to the size chart. A pattern can be made by hand or with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Every piece cut is a copy of the pattern, so a pattern error is carried into all later stages; the garment manufacturing process shows where the pattern sits between tech pack, sample and cutting.
Ask the pattern maker about input, grading and correction rounds
- Input: Does it make the pattern from a tech pack and size chart, a drawing or a sample garment? Time and price vary with the input.
- Product group experience: Knit, woven, denim, flat knit or babywear? For stretch or shrinking fabrics, does it ask for stretch and shrinkage data before starting?
- Grading: Which sizes, and to which size chart?
- Correction rounds: How many corrections after the fit test are in the price, and how many days does a corrected pattern take?
- Delivery format: Paper print-out and digital file? Ask about the file format and compatibility with your software.
- Fabric consumption: Does it do the marker or consumption calculation? Our fabric consumption guide explains the logic.
- Ownership and confidentiality: Put in writing who owns the pattern and that it will not be shared with other clients.
Pattern price depends on the style, number of sizes and revision rounds
Style complexity (pieces, details), number of sizes, the type of input, revision rounds, whether the marker and consumption calculation are included, and lead time set the price. Ask whether the quote is per style, per piece or per working hour, and which jobs cost extra.
Start with one style in pattern making and give approval in writing
Start with a single style before a large collection, and judge the pattern, fit sample and correction round together. Give pattern approval in writing, because any later change affects both sample and cutting. Fit tests need samples to travel back and forth, so allow courier time; if you plan to visit, a nearby company can shorten the process and the province filter helps.

Frequently asked questions
What information should I give a pattern maker?
Your tech pack or sample garment, the size chart and size range, the fabric type with its stretch and shrinkage details, and your preference for seam allowance and stitch type. A pattern maker fills in any measurement or detail you have not written down with their own guess.
When is grading done?
After the base-size pattern has been checked and approved; this approval is usually given on the fit sample. The T-shirt pattern module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) requires the base pattern to be checked and made error-free before grading, because a mistake in the base pattern is carried into every size. Fit between sizes is then checked with a size set sample (Sarkar, 2011).
Should I ask for the digital file of the pattern?
Our recommendation at Tekstil Rehberi is yes: without the file, it is hard to prepare a marker at another cutting room or to have the pattern corrected. Agree the delivery of the file and the ownership of the pattern in writing, and ask a lawyer about the legal details.
What determines the price of pattern making?
The price depends on the number of pieces and the amount of detail in the style, the number of sizes, the type of input (pattern from a tech pack or from a sample garment), the number of revision rounds, whether the marker and fabric consumption calculation are included, and the delivery time. Ask whether the quote is per style, per piece or per working hour, and which jobs cost extra. Have grading, the marker calculation and delivery of the digital file written as separate lines in every quote; if one company includes them and another charges extra, the totals will be misleading.
How long do pattern making and grading take?
No single lead time applies. It depends on the difficulty of the style, the number of sizes, how complete your input is and the number of correction rounds. Have the quote state separate days for the first pattern, each correction round and grading. Because grading starts only after the base-size pattern is approved, add the round-trip time of the fit test to your calendar.
