Key facts

  • Studios in this category prepare collection concepts, style drawings, fabric and color suggestions and tech packs; pattern making, garment sampling and bulk sewing are separate categories.
  • The tech pack is the document that links design and production; Turkey's MEB cutting module describes it as a style analysis (identification) form.
  • The MEB cutting module expects the form to list product name and season, front and back drawings, written details, a parts list, material samples, a size chart and, if needed, a measurement table.
  • A studio designs the product and defines it in the tech pack; a pattern room produces the pattern pieces from the tech pack and measurements.

Guide to Fashion Design Studios

Fashion design as a service is the design of products for brands and entrepreneurs; this category covers the studios and designers who do it: collection concept, style drawings, fabric and color suggestions, tech pack preparation and, at some companies, pattern and sample coordination. Pattern making is under pattern making, first-garment sewing under garment sampling and bulk sewing under CMT sewing; these stages follow design and are grouped under contract workshops and services.

From design to production: what should the studio deliver?

The document that links design and production is the tech pack. The cutting module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) describes it as a style analysis (identification) form containing the product name and season, front and back technical drawings, a written description of details the drawing cannot show, a parts list, samples of main and secondary materials, a size chart and, where needed, a measurement table. A studio whose output is only a fashion illustration cannot take you into production: every question the drawing leaves open can become a mistake in the workshop. Ask whether it delivers a tech pack a manufacturer can use; the garment manufacturing process shows how it relates to pattern and sample.

Ask the studio about references, service scope and revision rights

  • References that reached production: Which product groups has it designed? Ask for products that went into bulk production, not only a visual portfolio.
  • Service scope: List concept, drawing, tech pack, fabric and color selection, sample follow-up and manufacturer selection separately.
  • Revisions: How many changes can you request until the design is approved, and how is anything beyond that charged?
  • Production knowledge: Does the designer know constraints such as fabric width, sewing sequence and minimum order quantities (MOQ)? A design that is hard or expensive to make can look good on paper.
  • Intellectual property and confidentiality: Discuss who keeps the rights, the permission for use and a non-disclosure agreement at the start.
  • Way of working: One style, a seasonal collection or ongoing consulting? Does the calendar suit your season?

Design fees depend on scope, number of styles and rights transfer

Scope (drawing only, or tech pack and sample follow-up included), number of styles and revisions, transfer of rights and exclusivity, the designer's experience and the collection calendar set the price. Ask whether the fee is per style, per collection or per working time, and align scope before comparing quotes.

Review the design with your manufacturer and keep the first job small

Before approving a design, review it with your chosen manufacturer: is it feasible in fabric, sewing and cost? Make your first job a small capsule of a few styles rather than a whole season; that shows how useful the tech pack is in production. Design can be done remotely, but pattern, fitting and sample stages benefit from proximity, so allow courier time if you work across countries.

Frequently asked questions

Which files should I receive from the designer?

A complete tech pack that you can hand directly to a manufacturer, fabric and trim suggestions, and the editable source files of the drawings. The list and format of the files to be delivered should be written in the contract.

Who keeps the rights to the design?

This must be settled by contract: whether the rights are transferred, the scope and duration of any transfer, the designer's permission to show the work in their portfolio and confidentiality terms should all be written down. Ask a lawyer about the legal details.

What is the difference between a fashion design studio and a pattern room?

The studio designs the product and defines it in the tech pack; the pattern room produces the pattern pieces from the tech pack and measurements. Some companies offer both, so separate in the quote who does which job and which one is included in the price.

What determines the fee of a fashion design studio?

There is no single fee that applies to everyone. The fee depends on scope (drawing only, or tech pack and sample follow-up included), the number of styles, the number of revisions, transfer of rights and exclusivity, the designer's experience and the collection calendar. Ask whether the fee is calculated per style, per collection or per working time, and align the scope before you compare quotes.

How long does a design project take?

There is no fixed duration; it depends on the number of styles, on whether the scope includes tech pack and sample follow-up, and on the number of revision rounds. Because design comes before production, plan backwards from your season calendar: design approval, pattern, sample and bulk production follow in that order. Have the quote state the delivery date of each stage and the turnaround time per revision.
