  • Tightly twisted yarns give chiffon a slightly bumpy surface.
  • TextileGlossary.com calls chiffon very difficult to handle when sewing and recommends basting the pieces over tissue paper.
  • Knitted “chiffon-look” fabrics are not counted as chiffon; confirm the construction as well as the name in the quote.

Chiffon is a light, sheer plain-weave fabric woven from very fine, highly twisted yarns. This page is for buyers looking for chiffon for blouses, dresses, scarves and the top layer of eveningwear. Allow from the start for the extra difficulty a light fabric brings in cutting and sewing.

What does the chiffon fabric category cover?

Polyester, nylon, silk, viscose and cotton chiffons, plain-dyed or printed, are searched under this category. Tightly twisted yarns give the fabric a slightly bumpy surface, and the fabric is soft with a fluid drape. Knitted “chiffon-look” fabrics are not counted as chiffon, so confirm the construction as well as the name in the quote. For knitted alternatives, see knitted fabrics; for woven fabric with a shiny surface, see satin. Companies that make ready-made scarves, shawls and foulards from chiffon are listed under scarves and hijabs, and those that make evening dresses under wedding and evening dresses. Parent category: woven fabrics.

In a chiffon quote, ask about fiber, GSM, sheerness and print

  • Fiber and care. Chiffons that look alike can be made from different fibers. Ask in writing for the composition and care instructions.
  • GSM and sheerness. Have the GSM written in g/m² with its tolerance. If sheerness could be a problem for your product, decide on lining with the sample.
  • Width and length consistency. Ask about width consistency along the roll and about the dimensions after ironing.
  • Print. If printed, ask about the method, pattern repeat and fastness. For choosing a method, see textile printing methods.
  • Ease of sewing. Agree in advance with the workshop how seam allowances will be finished (for example French seams or binding), and ask the CMT workshop for a chiffon sewing sample; how to choose a contract workshop helps with the criteria.
  • Restricted substances list. If your brand has a restricted substances list (RSL), ask for a test report showing the fabric's conformity with it.
  • MOQ, lead time, samples. Ask separately for the minimum per color in plain dyeing and per design and colorway in printing. Also have the time needed to prepare the print sample written in the quote.

In chiffon, fiber, twist and print drive the price

For chiffon, the price per meter is driven by the fiber (silk or synthetic), yarn fineness and twist, and, if printed, the number of designs and colors; for plain dyeing, the lot size per color also affects the price. In the total cost, account separately for the difficulty of cutting and sewing: with a light, slippery fabric, labor time can lengthen and the risk of waste rises.

Where are chiffon fabric firms in Turkey?

TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, has no separate product code for chiffon; under the code for woven fabrics of synthetic and artificial filament yarn (13.20.31), where polyester and nylon chiffons are classified, 257 of the 366 firms with a valid capacity report (a document recording a plant's production capacity) are in Bursa (October 2026; TOBB). Silk and cotton chiffons are not in this code, so the count does not include them. Use the province filter for current addresses.

Settle the lining and sewing method before bulk production

In chiffon products the lining is often a separate item: choose the lining from lining fabrics suppliers, approving color under the same light as the chiffon. TextileGlossary.com calls chiffon very difficult to handle when sewing and recommends basting the pieces over tissue paper to make it easier; agree the cutting and sewing method with the workshop before bulk production.

Frequently asked questions

Which fiber is preferred for chiffon?

Chiffon can be woven from silk, cotton, nylon, polyester and viscose (rayon). The choice depends on the product's care instructions, handle and price target. Have the fiber composition written as a percentage; washing, ironing and dyeing behavior change with the fiber.

Is chiffon sheer, and does it need a lining?

By construction chiffon is a sheer fabric. Whether it needs a lining depends on GSM, color and design. Decide this not from a catalog but by seeing the sample against the light and on the body.

What should I check on printed chiffon?

Ask about the print method, pattern repeat, fastness and the handle after printing. Get an approved print sample and compare the production lot with it.

How does the minimum order for chiffon differ between plain-dyed and printed fabric?

Ask for the minimum per color in plain dyeing, and per design and colorway in printing, and get the two in writing separately. Also have the time needed to prepare the print sample written in the quote.
