Key facts

  • Denim is a cotton twill whose warp yarns are dyed with indigo while the weft stays undyed; CottonWorks names 3×1 twill as the standard denim construction.
  • Denim weight is given in ounces (oz/yd²); 1 oz/yd² is about 33.9 g/m², so 10 oz is about 339 g/m².
  • CottonWorks cites 8–16.5 oz for pants, jeans and jackets and 3.5–8 oz for blouse, top and shirt denim.
  • CottonWorks describes stretch denim yarn as core-spun, with cotton fibers twisted around an elastane core; ask for stretch and recovery values measured after washing.
  • Indigo dyes only the outer layer of the yarn and the core stays white, so the white core shows as the surface wears and gives denim its faded look.

Denim is a cotton twill fabric whose warp yarns are dyed with indigo while the weft yarns stay undyed. CottonWorks gives the weave as usually 2×1 or 3×1 twill and names 3×1 as the standard denim construction. This page covers mills that weave indigo-dyed yarn into denim and companies that sell denim fabric. For workshops that sew jeans and jackets, see denim apparel; for washing processes on sewn garments, see garment washing; for other woven types, see woven fabrics.

Denim weight is quoted in ounces

Denim weight is usually given in ounces (oz/yd², ounces per square yard). CottonWorks cites 3.5–8 oz for blouse, top and shirt denim and 8–16.5 oz for pants, jeans and jackets. To convert, take 1 oz/yd² ≈ 33.9 g/m²: 8 oz is about 271, 12 oz about 407 and 16.5 oz about 559 g/m². Ask which unit the quote uses and at which stage (greige or after finishing) the value was measured.

In a denim quote, ask about stretch, indigo fastness and dimensional change

  • Stretch: According to CottonWorks, stretch denim yarn is core-spun: cotton fibers twist around an elastane (spandex) core, and such yarn can be made on ring, air-jet or open-end spinning machines. Ask for the elastane percentage, stretch and recovery, with their after-wash values.
  • Dyeing and fastness: Indigo dyes the outer layer of the yarn and leaves the core white (ring dyeing, CottonWorks). As the surface wears, the white core shows through, which gives denim its faded look with use (US patent US5514187, Burlington Industries). Alongside this natural behavior, set limits for rubbing (EN ISO 105-X12) and washing (EN ISO 105-C06) fastness.
  • Dimensional change: Have a sample washed on your own program and the length and width change measured (EN ISO 6330, EN ISO 5077). Ask whether the fabric has had shrinkage-control finishing.
  • Special constructions: For selvedge or specially textured denim, verify with a sample that the firm makes the fabric itself.
  • MOQ and lead time: In denim the warp is dyed before weaving, so dyeing, weaving and finishing follow one another. Ask for the minimum yardage per shade and fabric code, and whether greige fabric is in stock.
  • Certificates: Ask for GOTS for an organic cotton claim and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 for harmful-substance testing. Better Cotton is a farm-level standard and does not mean organic. Details are in the certification guide.

In denim, oz weight, elastane and indigo dyeing steps drive the price

Cotton and yarn type, ounce weight, elastane, the number of indigo dyeing steps, special weaves and finishing drive the price. According to CottonWorks, denim shades need between three and nine dips and skying (airing) steps; the number depends on the shade wanted and can show up in the dyeing cost. The effect of garment washing on the fabric is covered in denim washing techniques.

Frequently asked questions

What does “oz” mean for denim fabric, and what is it in g/m²?

Oz is the weight per square yard (oz/yd²). 1 oz/yd² is about 33.9 g/m², so 10 oz is about 339 and 14 oz about 475 g/m². CottonWorks gives finished denim weights between 3.5 and 16.5 oz.

What should I ask for in a stretch denim quote?

The composition and elastane percentage, the oz weight, the stretch and recovery values and their measurements after washing. Also ask how the stretch is achieved; CottonWorks describes core-spun yarns in which cotton fibers wrap an elastane core. Have dimensional change and loss of stretch measured on the same washed sample.

Does denim shrink or bleed in the wash?

Both can happen. Cotton-dominant denim can change size when washed, while indigo dyes the outer layer of the yarn and wears off with rubbing. Have a sample washed on your own program, measure dimensional change to EN ISO 5077 (washing to EN ISO 6330), rubbing fastness to EN ISO 105-X12 and washing fastness to EN ISO 105-C06, and write the limits into the order.

What do denim fabric MOQ and lead time depend on?

In denim the warp is dyed before weaving, so dyeing, weaving and finishing follow one another, and lead time depends on this sequence. Ask in writing for the minimum yardage per shade and fabric code, whether greige fabric is in stock and the total lead time.

What drives the price of denim fabric?

Cotton and yarn type, oz weight, elastane, the number of indigo dyeing steps, special weaves and finishing. According to CottonWorks, denim shades need between three and nine dips and skying (airing) steps; the number depends on the shade wanted and can show up in the dyeing cost. Compare quotes at the same oz weight and elastane percentage.
