Guide to Workwear and Uniforms

Workwear and uniforms are the clothing worn by staff; this category covers companies that mass-produce them, from a single item to a full range for an organization: factory coveralls and pants, vests, aprons, hotel and restaurant staff outfits, security and service uniforms, school uniforms and medical scrubs for hospital staff. Certified protective clothing (EN ISO 11612, EN ISO 20471 and similar, including high-visibility vests) is in the protective clothing category; for surgical gowns, see medical textiles. For fashion and retail products, see apparel manufacturers.

First decide: uniform or protective clothing?

A corporate uniform is about appearance, fit, brand color and resistance to frequent washing. Safety workwear (protective clothing) must show documented performance against a specific risk: EN ISO 20471 defines high visibility and EN ISO 11612 heat and flame, while EN ISO 13688 sets general requirements such as harmlessness, ergonomics, size designation, aging, marking and manufacturer information. In the EU, personal protective equipment falls into three risk categories under Regulation (EU) 2016/425; Turkey's Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (in Turkish), prepared with that regulation in mind, does the same. In both, the CE marking is affixed before the product is placed on the market (as of October 8, 2026).

Ask which standard the product is made to and request the test report; which protection is needed is decided by your workplace's risk assessment. Our workwear standards guide explains the standards; for companies that specialize in protective clothing, see protective clothing.

Ask a uniform maker about references, repeat-order matching and logo work

  • References: Has the company done a similar job, such as factory coveralls or hotel staff outfits? Ask for a sample and a customer you can contact.
  • Sizes: With many staff the size spread is wide. Can it take measurements, supply extra sizes and repeat the order for later joiners?
  • Repeat orders: Fabric and color can vary from lot to lot. Can it supply the same fabric and shade later? Approve the color in writing against a swatch card or approved sample.
  • Wash durability: For frequently washed garments, ask for shrinkage and color fastness results.
  • Logo: Is it applied in the company's own workshop or by an outside embroidery or printing company? Check position and size on the sample.
  • MOQ and lead time: Get the minimum per style and fabric, and the busy-season delivery time, in writing.

In workwear, fabric, logo application and certification costs drive the price

Fabric (weight and blend), style details (pockets, reflective tape, zippers), quantity and size range, logo application, testing and certification, and packing. Whether a quote covers sewing only or the fabric too is the main scope question that distorts comparisons.

Run a wear trial with staff before the bulk order

Before ordering for all staff, run a wear trial with a few employees: comfort, movement, pocket positions and appearance after washing. A small sample batch prevents costly corrections on the bulk order. Fitting rounds mean samples traveling back and forth, so build courier time into your lead time.

Where are workwear manufacturers in Turkey?

The 626 firms with a valid capacity report in the Industry Database of TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, for industrial and occupational clothing (product code 14.12) are spread across 62 provinces, led by Istanbul (153), Denizli (74), Ankara (48) and Izmir (45) (October 2026). Its sub-items (industrial and occupational suits, jackets, pants, overalls and aprons) do not separate certified protective clothing from uncertified workwear. Counts include only manufacturers with a valid capacity report; confirm the production site on the company profile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between safety workwear (protective clothing) and ordinary workwear?

Safety workwear (protective clothing) carries performance against a specific risk (such as visibility, heat and flame) that has been tested and documented against the relevant standard. Ordinary workwear makes no such protection claim. Standards such as EN ISO 20471 for high visibility and EN ISO 11612 for heat and flame are used.

What information should I give a manufacturer when ordering uniforms?

A size and quantity list, fabric preference (composition and GSM, or a reference sample), color (swatch card or approved sample), the logo file and its position, conditions of use (frequent washing, outdoor work and so on) and the lead time you need. This information makes the quotes you receive comparable.

Does safety workwear (protective clothing) need CE marking?

For garments that count as personal protective equipment, yes. Regulation (EU) 2016/425 requires the CE marking to be affixed before the product is placed on the market, and Turkey's Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (Official Gazette, May 1, 2019, No. 30761), prepared with that regulation in mind, has the same requirement (art. 18); conformity assessment depends on the risk category (I, II, III). This is the position as of October 8, 2026. Ask an occupational safety specialist about the scope for your product and your obligations at your workplace.

What does the price of workwear depend on?

The price is set by the fabric (weight and blend), style details (number of pockets, reflective tape, zipper), quantity and size range, logo application, testing and certification costs, and packing. Whether a quote covers sewing only or the fabric too is the main scope question that distorts price comparisons. For the minimum order and lead time, get the minimum per style and fabric and the busy-season delivery time in writing.
