- Turkey's fiber labeling regulation has no bamboo in its fiber-name list; viscose made from bamboo cellulose is written as 'viskoz' (viscose) on the label (as of October 8, 2026).
- In the labeling regulation, modal and lyocell are fiber names separate from viscose; write the fiber name separately in the order (as of October 8, 2026).
- Viscose loses a significant part of its strength when wet and regains it when dry; put a fabric sample through a wash and shrinkage test (Gamper et al., 2013).
- Viscose can be spun on ring, rotor (open-end) and air-jet systems (joint technical publication of Lenzing and Rieter).
- Per Lenzing and Rieter, cellulosic fibers such as viscose are used at 100% or blended with cotton or polyester in fashion, everyday clothing, underwear and home textiles.
Guide to Viscose Yarn

- Gizem Polat
Viscose yarn is spun from viscose fiber, in which cellulose from a source such as wood pulp is turned back into fiber by chemical processing. It is sought as an alternative to cotton or polyester in products that need a soft fabric with good drape and moisture absorption. The directory has no separate categories for modal and lyocell; look for companies selling these yarns on this page and in the product descriptions of company profiles. TENCEL™ is Lenzing's brand name for its lyocell and modal fibers; on the quote and the label, ask for the fiber name (lyocell or modal).
Where is it used?
According to the joint technical publication Processing of Viscose Fibers by Lenzing and Rieter, cellulosic fibers such as viscose are used both at 100% and in blends with fibers such as cotton and polyester, in fashion fabrics, everyday clothing, underwear and home textiles. Saying at the start which composition you want makes both the choice of yarn and the quote easier.
Where does the fiber come from?
The viscose fiber can come from a different fiber producer than the company that spins the yarn. So ask the yarn company two things: which producer does it buy the fiber from, and does it hold a forest certificate and a chain-of-custody certificate, such as FSC or PEFC, for the forest the pulp comes from? The same count of yarn can behave differently when spun from different fiber. Put a clause in the specification that the supplier must inform you if the fiber source changes. Companies that sell viscose staple fiber in loose form are not on this page; they are in the textile fibers category.
Wet strength and shrinkage
Viscose loses a significant part of its strength when wet and regains it when dry; low wet strength can cause shrinkage and loss of shape in washing. So look not at the yarn sample but at the yarn made into fabric: put a fabric sample through a wash and shrinkage test and share the result with the yarn supplier. For how viscose behaves as a summer fabric, see breathable fabrics for summer.
Certificates and labeling
If a harmful-substances certificate such as OEKO-TEX is requested for the fiber and the yarn, take the certificate number and check which product group it covers and for how long it is valid. What certificates prove is explained in the textile certifications guide.
As of the date of this page (October 8, 2026), only the names in the Annex 1 list of Turkey's Regulation on Textile Fiber Names and on the Labeling and Marking of the Fiber Composition of Textile Products may be used for the fiber composition on the label of a textile product in Turkey (Article 6). The list has no bamboo; the fiber the trade calls viskon is listed as “viskoz” (viscose), and viscose made from bamboo cellulose is written under that name. Modal and lyocell are separate names. Check the current text of the regulation before finalizing label wording, and consult an expert if needed.
Viscose yarn price and lead time: spinning system, count, fiber source
Viscose can be spun on ring, rotor (open-end) and air-jet systems; the system chosen, the count, the source of the fiber and whether the yarn is raw or dyed change the quote. If the fiber is not in stock, the lead time gets longer; ask about this before you request the quote. If you will blend viscose with polyester or cotton, see the blended yarn page; for the properties of the fiber itself, see viscose.

Frequently asked questions
Is bamboo yarn the same as viscose yarn?
Yarn sold as bamboo yarn is mostly viscose made from bamboo cellulose; the US Federal Trade Commission also says such products should be named viscose (rayon). Ask for the fiber name, not the trade name, on the quote and on the cone label. As of the date of this page (October 8, 2026), bamboo is not on the fiber-name list in the Turkish labeling regulation; this fiber is written on a product label in Turkey as viscose (viskoz in Turkish). If the garment will be sold in another market, that market's labeling rules apply; check the label text with an expert or your testing laboratory.
Are modal and lyocell also counted as viscose?
No. All three are regenerated cellulosic fibers, but they have separate names in fiber-name lists: viscose is made by the viscose process; modal by a modified viscose process that gives a higher wet modulus; lyocell by dissolving cellulose in an organic solvent. Write the fiber name separately in the order, and if modal or lyocell is offered instead of viscose, ask the supplier to treat it as a substitution and submit it for your approval.
What decides the minimum order quantity for viscose yarn?
It depends on whether the yarn comes from stock, which fiber it is spun from (viscose, modal or lyocell), which system it is spun on (ring, rotor or air-jet), its count, and whether it is raw or dyed. The exact quantity depends on the supplier; ask in writing for the unit (kilograms, pallets) and for the condition under which the minimum can be lower. Ask in the same message whether the fiber is in stock.
What sets the price and lead time of viscose yarn?
The price varies with the spinning system, the count, the source of the fiber, and whether the yarn is raw or dyed. Lead time also depends on whether the fiber is in stock: if it is not, the lead time gets longer. Compare quotes on the same fiber name (viscose, modal or lyocell), the same count, the same system and the same payment terms.
