- Piqué, a fabric with a textured surface, is the most common polo fabric; one mill gives 180–240 and one supplier 190–240 GSM, and these are declared figures.
- According to Cotton Incorporated, piqué stretches less than single jersey, and its shrinkage in length in washing may be greater than its shrinkage in width.
- In the Turkish trade piqué is often called “lakost”, but Lacoste is a brand name; the fabric is piqué, and “polo” describes the shape of the collar and placket.
- When logo embroidery is done on cut pieces, plies are numbered at the cutting stage so the pieces return matched to the right size and ply (MEB).
- TOBB has no separate polo code; in the closest code (14.14.11, men’s knitted shirts and undershirts), 299 of 421 firms with a capacity report are in Istanbul (October 2026).
Guide to Polo Shirts

The polo shirts category covers the factories and CMT (cut, make, trim) workshops that make knitted shirts with a collar and a buttoned placket, in piqué or single jersey. Products without a collar and placket are under T-shirts; sweaters with a polo collar should be searched under knitwear and sweaters.
The TOBB Industry Database has no separate product code for polo shirts; of the 421 firms with a valid capacity report under the closest code, men’s knitted shirts and undershirts (14.14.11), 299 are in Istanbul (October 2026). Because polos are not tracked separately, the figure is only an approximate indicator. The count leaves out manufacturers that have no capacity report.
Why a polo is a different job from a plain T-shirt
Compared with a plain T-shirt, a polo adds collar, placket, buttonhole and button operations. Each one adds minutes to the style’s sewing time and calls for buttonhole and button-attaching machines. Machine makers even offer dedicated machines that automate polo placket sewing (Juki, for example). Not every workshop that sews T-shirts can sew a polo collar to the same standard, so on the sample check especially how the collar sits and how straight the placket is.
Fabric: piqué
The most common polo fabric is piqué, a fabric with a textured surface (known in Turkey as “lakost”). One mill gives a range of 180–240 and one supplier 190–240 GSM; these are declared figures. According to Cotton Incorporated, piqué stretches less than single jersey, and its shrinkage in length in washing may be greater than its shrinkage in width. So write the dimensional change after washing into the specification, and wash the sample to compare how the collar and placket sit.
For sport use, polyester-dominant single jersey or piqué is also used; confirm composition and pilling behavior on the sample. For fabric detail, see our T-shirt fabric guide.
Corporate and bulk orders
A polo is often ordered in bulk as staff and dealer clothing. The following questions then come first:
- Logo embroidery. What are the embroidery capacity and minimum order (MOQ)? You can look at embroidery workshops for the service, and at workwear and uniform companies for corporate clothing.
- Corporate color. Body color is often part of brand identity. To match the shade on a repeat order, keep the approved fabric swatch and the dye-lot record of the first order, and approve later colors against this reference.
- Extreme sizes. A staff list can run from very small to very large sizes. Ask whether there is a surcharge or a per-size minimum for the small quantities in the extreme sizes.
- Distribution. If separate packing by branch or by person is required, get its effect on price and lead time in writing in advance.
Polo pricing: collar and placket operations, fabric and embroidery
Fabric type and GSM, the collar, placket and button operations, embroidery and the packing method are the main items. Because the same style has more operations than a plain T-shirt, ask which sewing minutes the labor charge in the quote is based on.

Frequently asked questions
Is a polo shirt the same as “lakost”?
In everyday Turkish trade “lakost” is used for both the fabric and the polo shirt, but they are different things: Lacoste is a brand name, the fabric is piqué, and “polo” describes the shape of the collar and placket. In a quote, write the construction, fabric and weight together, for example “polo collar, piqué, about 200 GSM”.
For corporate polos, is the logo embroidered on cut pieces or on the finished garment?
Both are used; the choice depends on the position of the embroidery, the style and the embroidery workshop’s set-up. If it is done on cut pieces, the front panels go to embroidery separately, and plies are numbered at the cutting stage so that the pieces return matched to the right size and ply (Turkish Ministry of National Education vocational module). Approve the position and size of the embroidery on a sample, and ask whether the embroidery charge is included in the sewing quote.
What does the minimum order for corporate polos depend on?
There is no official minimum; it varies with the fabric, the embroidery and the size distribution. Ask for the sewing minimum separately from the embroidery minimum. Have the quote state whether there is a surcharge or a per-size minimum for small quantities in the extreme sizes, and how packing by branch or by person affects price and lead time.
In which provinces are polo shirt manufacturers located?
The TOBB Industry Database has no separate product code for polo shirts; of the 421 firms with a valid capacity report under the closest code, men’s knitted shirts and undershirts (14.14.11), 299 are in Istanbul (October 2026). Because polos are not tracked separately in this code, the figure is only an approximate indicator. The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report; verify the production address with the company.
