Key facts

  • The T-shirt is the most exported product in İHKİB's knitted apparel report: cotton T-shirts and singlets (HS 6109.10) were worth about US$1.54 billion in 2025 (İHKİB, April 2026).
  • Core T-shirt operations are attaching the neck rib, the shoulder seam (with a stay tape so it does not stretch), sleeve setting and the hem (MEB vocational module).
  • When the print is applied to cut pieces, each ply must be numbered so that the pieces do not get mixed up (MEB vocational module).
  • There is no single right T-shirt weight; guides cite roughly 120-150 GSM as light, 150-180 as mid-weight and 180 and above as heavy, and these are not standards.
  • In the TOBB Industry Database, 1,260 of the 2,396 firms with a valid capacity report for knitted T-shirts, undershirts and tank tops (14.14.30) are in Istanbul (October 2026).

The T-shirts category covers the factories and CMT (cut, make, trim) workshops that make short- and long-sleeve, crew-neck and V-neck T-shirts, printed and plain; it is a sub-sector of knit apparel. Products with a collar and button placket are under polo shirts; if you only need printing or embroidery, see textile printing workshops.

Scale and specialization in T-shirt production

The T-shirt is the most exported product in İHKİB's knitted apparel report: in the group of cotton T-shirts, singlets and other vests (HS 6109.10), 2025 exports were about US$1.54 billion (İHKİB, April 2026). Because the product is so common, companies differ widely in scale and specialization. The hard part is finding the company whose scale and specialization fit your product.

For where T-shirts are made, the TOBB Industry Database gives a rough guide. Of the 2,396 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for knitted T-shirts, undershirts and tank tops (product code 14.14.30), 1,260 are in Istanbul and 175 in Izmir (October 2026). The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report; small workshops without one may be missing.

T-shirt quotes: neck rib, fabric behavior, print and size breakdown

A T-shirt is a simple product with few operations, so price differences usually come from the workshop's efficiency and the scope of the quote. Have the quote state whether cutting, label attaching, ironing and packing, and printing are included; the items are tabulated in our guide to CMT T-shirt sewing prices.

Also ask:

  • Critical sewing points. Attaching the neck rib, the shoulder seam (a stay tape is added so that it does not stretch), sleeve setting and the hem are the core T-shirt operations. What tolerances and in-line checks does the company apply at these points?
  • Fabric behavior. Single jersey, piqué or interlock? Combed or carded? See our T-shirt fabric guide. Is twist in the fabric (spirality, where the wale lines rotate around the garment) controlled?
  • Where printing happens. By which technique and in which workshop? A separate workshop adds coordination and lead-time risk.
  • Color and size breakdown. Is the minimum applied per style, per color or per size? The same total quantity can cost more as the breakdown grows.

T-shirt samples: fit, size set and acceptance at delivery

Before bulk production, the approved sample is the reference for a T-shirt too; agree the sample lead time and fee at the start. The fit sample is approved in one size, and the size set sample checks consistency between sizes. At delivery, set an acceptance plan with sampling-based final inspection (measurements, stitching, appearance, labels) and defect classes; the method is explained in our AQL inspection guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both a manufacturer and a printer for printed T-shirts?

It depends on the company: some manufacturers print in-house or through a partner, others only sew. When the print is applied to cut pieces, each ply must be numbered so that the pieces do not get mixed up (Turkish Ministry of National Education vocational module). Have the quote state whether printing is in scope, its separate price and its minimum.

What fabric weight should I specify for a T-shirt?

There is no single right weight. Guides give roughly 120-150 GSM for a lightweight T-shirt, 150-180 for an everyday mid-weight and 180 g/m² and above for heavy and premium T-shirts; these are not standards. State the GSM together with the state in which it is measured, and verify it on the sample.

How do I stop the side seam twisting after washing?

In circular knit fabric the wale columns may not run exactly vertical; after washing the garment twists and the side seam moves out of position. This twist (spirality) is measured with ISO 16322-3, and according to Cotton Incorporated, high-twist single-ply yarn increases the tendency. Write the post-wash twist limit into the specification, and wash and check the sample.

What does the minimum order for a T-shirt depend on?

There is no official minimum; it varies by company. First ask whether the minimum applies per style, per color or per size: the same total quantity can cost more as the breakdown grows. If the fabric is to be custom dyed, the deciding minimum often comes from the fabric lot, not from the sewing line; printing may also have its own price and minimum.

In which provinces are T-shirt manufacturers located?

In the TOBB Industry Database, 1,260 of the 2,396 firms with a valid capacity report for knitted T-shirts, undershirts and tank tops (product code 14.14.30) are in Istanbul and 175 in Izmir (October 2026). The data cover only manufacturers that hold a capacity report; ask the company separately where production is actually done.
