Key facts

  • Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) cutting module describes three groups of hand-guided cutting machines: round-knife cutter, straight-knife cutter and band knife machine.
  • Per MEB, the round-knife cutter suits straight-line and rough cutting, the straight-knife cutter suits high plies and the band knife machine suits precise cuts such as notches and curves.
  • MEB's spreading module describes a pin table to keep plies from slipping on checked and striped fabrics; fabrics with a nap direction, such as velvet, are spread in one direction only.
  • MEB's cutting module makes the choice of cutting machine depend on the fabric, the number of plies, the pattern pieces and the features of the machine itself.
  • MEB's cutting module calls for steel gloves when working with the band knife machine.

Guide to Fabric Cutting Machines

Fabric cutting machine suppliers are companies that sell cutting room equipment: spreading tables, round-knife and straight-knife cutters, band knife machines and computer-controlled cutting systems belong to this category. If you want a workshop to cut your fabric for you, look under fabric cutting services.

What does cutting room equipment include?

The cutting module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) describes hand-guided cutting machines in three groups. The round-knife cutter suits straight-line and rough cutting, and the straight-knife cutter suits high plies. The band knife machine (a band saw mounted at the end of the spreading table) is used for precise cuts such as small pieces, notches and curves. The spreading table and spreading equipment that lay fabric in plies go with them. Computer-controlled systems drive the cutting from a file. Laser cutting of fabric is also one of the methods in use; if you are considering a laser system, ask the seller about infrastructure such as ventilation and about safety requirements. Laser and ozone machines used for denim washing and surface finishing are in the dyeing and finishing machines category instead.

Questions that decide the choice

  • Which fabric do you cut: knit, woven, elastane or pile? The spreading method differs for pile and directional fabric.
  • How many plies will you cut, and are the pieces small, curved or straight?
  • Does your daily cutting volume justify a computer-controlled investment?
  • What do blades and sharpening stones cost, and how are they supplied? You can also compare them with textile machinery spare parts suppliers outside the seller.
  • Numbering, interlining (fusing) and sorting come after cutting. Plan the tables and a fusing press for these steps too.
  • Are your marker files and software compatible with the machine? For marker planning, see marker planning and fabric wastage.

How do you test cutting quality?

Ask the seller for a trial cut on your own fabric at your own ply height. Check whether the top and bottom pieces of the cut stack are identical, how even the edges are and where marks such as notches fall. For the place of cutting in garment production, our garment manufacturing process guide gives a short frame.

Where are the makers of fabric winding, folding and cutting machines?

Of the 138 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for machines that wind, fold and cut textile fabrics (product code 28.94.21.70), 42 are in Istanbul, 19 in Tekirdağ, 18 in Bursa and 17 in Gaziantep (October 2026). The database belongs to TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey. The code also covers machines that reel, unreel and fold fabric, so the count is not limited to cutting-room equipment makers. The count covers manufacturers in Turkey, not dealers of imported brands.

Cutting room investment: automation, table size and ply capacity set the price

The automation gap between a hand-guided cutter and a computer-controlled table, table size and ply capacity, software license and update costs, attachments and consumables. Because it is a cutting tool, also ask whether safety equipment such as a blade guard and a stopping device is included in the price; the MEB cutting module calls for steel gloves when working with the band knife. For the sewing line and other production machines after cutting, see the textile machinery sector page.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a hand-guided cutting machine or a band knife machine?

There is no single right answer. The cutting module of Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) makes the choice depend on the properties of the fabric, the number of plies, the features of the pattern pieces and the features of the machine itself. Ask the seller for a trial cut on your own fabric at your own ply height.

Which spreading table suits checked and striped fabric?

The MEB spreading module describes a pin table, whose top carries pins, to keep the plies from slipping on checked and striped fabrics; fabrics with a nap direction, such as velvet, are spread in one direction only. When you buy a table, ask about a pin-table option and whether the pin length can be adjusted.

Does it make sense to outsource cutting instead of buying a cutting machine?

If your cutting volume is low, or you do not want to invest in a table, machine, floor space and marker work, you can buy the service from cutting workshops. To decide, calculate your monthly cutting volume and wastage target together with the investment cost.

What determines the price of a fabric cutting machine?

The automation level affects the price: there is a price gap between a hand-guided cutter and a computer-controlled cutting table. Table size and ply capacity, software license and updates, attachments and consumable parts also go into the price. Ask as well whether safety equipment such as a blade guard and a stopping device is included in the price.

In which Turkish provinces are fabric winding, folding and cutting machine makers located?

Of the 138 firms with a valid TOBB capacity report for machines that wind, fold and cut textile fabrics (product code 28.94.21.70), 42 are in Istanbul, 19 in Tekirdağ, 18 in Bursa and 17 in Gaziantep (October 2026).
