Key facts

  • Modern shuttleless looms are grouped by how they carry the weft yarn: air-jet, water-jet, rapier and projectile (INFLIBNET e-PG).
  • Only yarns that do not absorb water (hydrophobic yarns) can be woven on a water-jet loom, so this loom is mostly preferred for synthetic fabric (INFLIBNET e-PG).
  • An air-jet loom is known for a high weft insertion rate, but it needs a clean, uninterrupted compressed-air supply (INFLIBNET e-PG).
  • A dobby raises the heald frames in a programmed order and suits patterns with a small repeat; a jacquard controls the warp ends individually (INFLIBNET e-PG).
  • Before weaving, yarns are wound onto bobbins and the warp onto a beam; the warp is sized where needed (especially cotton) and drawn in or tied in (Duru Baykal and Kumaş, 2021).

Guide to Weaving Machines

Weaving machine suppliers are the companies that sell air-jet, rapier, projectile and water-jet looms, together with auxiliary preparation machines, to businesses that weave fabric. If you are looking for woven fabric itself, see woven fabric manufacturers. For the basic difference between knit and woven fabric, our fabric types and properties guide helps.

How is the loom type chosen?

Modern shuttleless looms are grouped by how they carry the weft yarn. An air-jet loom uses compressed air and a water-jet loom uses pressurized water. Because only yarns that do not absorb water (hydrophobic yarns) can be woven on a water-jet loom, it is mostly preferred for synthetic fabric. A rapier loom passes the weft with a gripper on the end of a rapier. On a projectile loom, a small projectile fired by the energy stored in a torsion bar carries the weft. Which one suits you depends on fabric width and weight, yarn type and the number of weft colors.

Reed width, site needs and preparation: questions for the loom seller

  • Do the offered loom's reed width, weft system and pattern equipment (dobby or jacquard) suit your fabric?
  • What does the site need: compressed air, water, electricity, floor and ventilation? On air-jet systems, compressed-air capacity has to be counted.
  • What do installation, commissioning and operator training cover?
  • Which machines will prepare the warp, and does their capacity match your number of looms?
  • Where can you see a loom of the same model weaving a fabric close to yours?
  • Is stock of critical parts held in Turkey? You can complement the seller's support with textile machinery spare parts and textile machinery repair companies listed here.

A loom's price follows its reed width, weft system and pattern equipment

Number of looms, reed width, weft insertion system, pattern equipment, level of automation, and whether the machine is new or used. Compressed air on an air-jet loom and water on a water-jet loom are part of the running costs, so estimate the monthly energy and water bill next to the machine price. Have preparation machines, infrastructure such as compressed air, and installation added to the quote: the price of the loom is only part of the total investment.

Service and installation

A loom is usually installed and adjusted at your plant. Have the quote state from which province the technician will come and who pays the visit fee during the warranty. For a loom going to a plant abroad, find out who will service it in that country. With the province filter you can list sellers and service companies near your plant.

According to the TOBB Industry Database, most manufacturers with a valid capacity report for weaving machines (product code 28.94.13) are in Gaziantep and Istanbul (October 2026). TOBB is the umbrella body of Turkey's chambers and commodity exchanges (the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey). This covers firms that manufacture in Turkey; it does not show agents of imported brands or service companies. Weaving machine parts have a separate product code and are not included.

Other machine groups are on the textile machinery page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between an air-jet loom and a rapier loom?

An air-jet loom carries the weft with compressed air. It is known for a high weft insertion rate, but it needs a clean, uninterrupted compressed-air supply. A rapier loom passes the weft with a gripper on the end of a rapier; manufacturers present these looms as suited to different yarn types and to multicolor weft. The yarn type, width and weft variety of your fabric decide the choice.

Do I need weaving preparation machines as well as looms?

Before weaving, yarns are wound onto bobbins, the warp is wound onto a beam with the required number of ends and length, sized where needed (especially for cotton warp), and prepared for the loom by drawing-in or tying-in. Decide up front whether you will do preparation in your own plant; if preparation capacity cannot keep up with your number of looms, the looms will stand idle.

What difference do dobby and jacquard equipment make?

A dobby raises the heald frames in a programmed order; because the number of frames is limited, it suits patterns with a small repeat. A jacquard controls the warp ends individually and makes large, complex patterns possible. Which one you need depends on the repeat size of the pattern you will weave.

Which costs should I count besides the price of a loom?

The price of the loom is only part of the total investment. Have preparation machines, infrastructure such as compressed air, and installation written into the quote separately. On the running-cost side, compressed air for an air-jet loom and water for a water-jet loom go into the monthly bill. Compare quotes on the same reed width, weft system and pattern equipment.

In which Turkish provinces are weaving machine makers located?

According to the TOBB Industry Database, most manufacturers with a valid capacity report for weaving machines (product code 28.94.13) are in Gaziantep and Istanbul (October 2026). This covers firms that manufacture in Turkey; it does not show agents of imported brands or service companies. For service, search for companies near your plant with the province filter in the directory.
