Guide to the textile industry in Sanliurfa

Raw material is Sanliurfa's strongest card in textiles. According to the July 2025 cotton report of TEPGE, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's agricultural economics institute, 41.1% of Turkey's cotton production in 2024 took place in this province (Şanlıurfa in Turkish). TÜİK's 2023 data show 881,030 metric tons of seed cotton produced on about 2.03 million decares (roughly 203,000 hectares), which is about 42% of Turkey's output (Şanlıurfa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, cotton market research and sector report, 2024).

From cotton to yarn and fabric

Harvested seed cotton is ginned to separate the fiber from the seed, and the fiber goes to spinners (see cotton). The Sanliurfa Investment Support Office says the province's manufacturing is mostly agriculture-based and names textiles and apparel among its leading sectors. According to exporter association records, companies registered in Sanliurfa exported USD 35.0 million of textiles and raw materials (yarn, fabric, fiber) in 2025, 15% less than the year before. The province ranks 15th in Turkey in this sector (AKİB, December 2025). The registration shows the exporter's province, not where the goods were made.

Turkey's own cotton output falls short of what its industry uses. In the 2023/24 season the country produced 777,000 metric tons of lint cotton, consumed 1.81 million metric tons and imported 777,000 metric tons (TEPGE). A yarn spun in Sanliurfa is therefore not necessarily made of Turkish cotton. This guide does not give the number of textile companies in the province or a split by sub-sector. Confirm at company level whether a supplier spins yarn, weaves fabric or makes garments, using industrial zone and chamber records.

Industrial zones (OIZs)

Organized industrial zones (OIZs; OSB in Turkish) are planned industrial parks in which companies use common infrastructure. According to the OIZ list of OSBÜK, the zones' national association, six OIZs in the province are in operation: Sanliurfa OIZ (mixed, 2,148 hectares), Sanliurfa TDI OIZ (agriculture-based specialized, 853 hectares), Sanliurfa Food Specialized OIZ (235), Viranşehir OIZ (225.6), Birecik OIZ (116) and Siverek OIZ (100). The largest area is the mixed Sanliurfa OIZ; Viranşehir, Birecik and Siverek have district OIZs.

What to ask a yarn or fabric supplier

Being close to the cotton is not a quality measure on its own. Ask:

  • Which cotton lot was the yarn spun from, and does the blend stay constant between lots?
  • What is the spinning system (ring, open-end, compact), and is the yarn carded or combed?
  • Which system are count and ply written in? The yarn count converter turns quotes into the same unit.
  • Is the seller a spinning mill or an intermediary?

For yarn, see the cotton yarn and yarn directory pages; for garments, ready-made garments. The Şanlıurfa Chamber of Commerce and Industry lists applications for a TOBB capacity report among its services (TOBB is the national union of chambers). Ask the supplier for such a report to verify capacity.
