Before the earthquakes, textiles provided more than half of the jobs in Malatya's organized industrial zones (OIZs), and that employment has shrunk since. According to a statement by the chairman of the Malatya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MTSO), reported by the İHA news agency on September 17, 2026, textiles made up 52% of OIZ employment until the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, and textile employment in the OIZ fell from about 21,000 to about 15,000. The Fırat Development Agency also lists textiles among the province's prominent industries.
Industrial zones (OIZs)
An OIZ (Turkish: OSB) is a planned industrial park with shared infrastructure. According to the Fırat Development Agency's Malatya page, OIZ I has about 250 facilities and more than 17,000 employees. In OIZ II all parcels are allocated, and about 200 firms employ more than 14,000 people. The page does not state the date of these figures.
In the list of OSBÜK, the OIZ association of Turkey, the Central I OIZ covers 1,559 hectares, the II OIZ 734 hectares and the Darende OIZ 48 hectares. The address of the second OIZ is in Yeşilyurt district. The 2024-2028 TRB1 Regional Plan calls Malatya and Elazığ the locomotive of manufacturing in the Eastern Anatolia Region. According to exporter association records, companies registered in Malatya exported USD 18.8 million of textiles and raw materials (yarn, fabric, fiber) in 2025, and the province ranks 19th in Turkey in this sector (AKİB, December 2025). That figure excludes ready-made garments and shows the exporter's registered province.
Employment since the earthquakes
The MTSO chairman named rising labor and energy costs among the reasons for the fall in OIZ textile employment. He called on companies to move from contract manufacturing to their own brands and to exports. The report is based on the Anatolian Sector Meetings-Malatya event, organized by MTSO and the Fashion and Ready-to-Wear Federation; business-to-business meetings followed the speeches. The chairman also invited investors in İzmir, Bursa, Denizli, Kocaeli and Istanbul to form partnerships.
In Turkey's 2024-2028 National Regional Development Strategy, Malatya is among the "Regional Centers" and the "Post-Disaster Reconstruction Provinces" (Afet Sonrası İhya İlleri) (TRB1 Regional Plan 2024-2028, p. 4). This classification covers the province as a whole, not textiles specifically.
Sourcing in Malatya: what to check
Capacity and headcount have changed since the earthquakes, so do not rely on old figures. Ask for the current capacity report, the number of employees registered with Turkey's social security institution (SGK) and the machine list. If you plan to place contract (CMT, cut-make-trim) work, use how to choose a CMT workshop in Turkey. If you want production under your own brand, private label clothing manufacturers in Turkey walks through the steps. You can search companies on the ready-made garments and CMT contract sewing pages.
