- This category covers machine-made, tufted and hand-woven carpets and rugs, including kilims and doormats; the production method drives price, minimum order and lead time.
- Wall-to-wall carpet and carpet tiles are divided into use classes under EN 1307; loose-laid rugs and runners are outside the scope of the standard (BSI and EVS records).
- In the European EN 13501-1 classification, floor coverings are treated as a separate group; if a specification names a fire class, check that the report shows that class.
- A 2007 State Planning Organization report names a polypropylene, nonwoven and machine-made carpet cluster in Gaziantep.
- In the TOBB Industry Database, 262 of the 628 firms with a capacity report for carpets and floor coverings (13.93) are in Gaziantep, as are 182 of 239 for machine-made carpet (October 2026).
Guide to Carpets and Rugs

Choose the production method before you choose the company: two carpets of the same size made by different methods look nothing alike in price, minimum order and lead time.
Carpet production methods
- Machine-made carpet: woven on a loom; suits volume production and complex, multicolor designs.
- Tufting: pile yarn is worked into a carrier backing with needles and then covered with a second backing at the back. It is a widely used production method for residential floor carpet.
- Hand-woven rugs and kilims: based on handwork, so quantities are limited; the price depends on labor, material and knot density. A kilim is a flat-woven surface without pile.
Doormats and tufted mats are also in this category; cotton bath mats are listed under towels and bathrobes, and rubber, PVC and car mats are out of scope. Check on the company profile which method it uses before you request a quote.
Pile yarn and technical criteria
The pile yarn largely determines a carpet's durability and price; polypropylene, polyamide (nylon), polyester, acrylic and wool are common choices. For pile yarn suppliers, see also wool yarn, acrylic yarn and polyester yarn. Ask the quote to state pile height, pile density, total weight (g/m²), the carrier backing and the back coating. Do not compare weight alone: the same weight can come from a dense, short pile or a sparse, long one, and the two behave differently in use.
Where the carpet will be used
A carpet for a home is not the same as one for a hotel, office or shopping mall. State the place of use and the expected traffic in your quote request. Wall-to-wall carpet and carpet tiles are divided into use classes under the EN 1307 standard. Loose-laid rugs and runners are outside the scope of this standard, so for them ask which criterion the company uses to declare a class. A non-slip backing and color fastness should also go into the product specification.
Price, MOQ and shipping
The price depends on the type and amount of pile yarn, density, number of colors, design complexity, size and handwork. Because a custom design usually needs loom or print preparation in most methods, the minimum order quantity (MOQ) is higher than for a design in stock. A carpet is a bulky, heavy product, so freight can be a significant part of the unit price, especially in export. Ask the quote to state whether it is FOB (free on board) or delivered to your destination.
Where is production concentrated?
Gaziantep stands out in carpets. In the Industry Database of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), 262 of the 628 firms with a valid capacity report for carpets and other textile floor coverings (code 13.93) are in Gaziantep, as are 182 of the 239 firms reporting machine-made carpets (code 13.93.11.00.04) (October 2026); in code 13.93, Istanbul (105) and Denizli (104) follow. Exports show a similar picture: according to the Turkish Exporters Assembly's (TİM) exports by province and sector, firms headquartered in Gaziantep made 69.6% and firms headquartered in Istanbul 22.4% of the $2.84 billion in carpet exports in 2025. These shares follow the exporter's legal headquarters and do not show where the carpets were made.
The State Planning Organization's Ninth Development Plan textile report (Ankara 2007, in Turkish) also names Gaziantep as a machine-made carpet cluster, together with polypropylene and nonwovens (it describes the carpet making there as "small" at the time, and the report is almost twenty years old); if you are looking for machine-made carpet, it is one of the first provinces to check in the province filter. Uşak is a hand-weaving center known for the historic carpets that bear its name. In hand-weaving, a regional name often describes a design tradition and does not show on its own where the carpet was woven; ask for the place of production in writing. Neighboring sub-sectors such as towels, bed linen and curtains are on the home textiles page.

Frequently asked questions
What should I ask for when buying hand-woven rugs?
Ask in writing for the material (wool, cotton or silk), the type of dye, the knot density, the size and the place of production. Because every rug is made by hand, small deviations in size and color are normal; set the tolerance in the contract.
How should I request a carpet sample?
For design and color, ask for a swatch card or a small sample piece; for construction, ask for a cut section made with the same pile yarn, density and backing as bulk production. Agree the color tolerance between the sample and bulk production at the outset.
Which documents should I ask for when buying carpet for commercial spaces?
Ask for the declaration of the product's use class, the fire-behavior test report (in the European EN 13501-1 classification, floor coverings are treated as a separate group), color fastness results and, if available, a chemical safety certificate such as OEKO-TEX. If the project specification names a fire class, check that the report shows that class and relates to the same product.
What decides the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for carpets?
There is no single figure; it varies with the production method, the design and the size. Because a custom design usually needs loom or print preparation in most methods, the MOQ is higher than for a design in stock. In hand-woven rugs, quantities are limited anyway, and the price depends on labor, material and knot density. A carpet is bulky and heavy, so freight affects the unit price; ask for the quote as FOB (free on board) or delivered to your destination.
