- A pillow or comforter quote should state size, filling type, fill weight, cover fabric and quilting spacing separately.
- Composition labeling of down and feather filling is defined in EN 12934; the standard was revised in February 2025 and now includes fill power labeling.
- Fill power (EN 12130) measures the volume taken up by a unit mass of filling, not the amount of filling, so the net fill weight must be written down separately.
- EN ISO 12952 tests the ignitability of bedding items such as pillows and comforters: Part 1 uses a smoldering cigarette as the ignition source, Part 2 a match-flame equivalent.
- Turkey exported USD 172.9 million of pillows, comforters and sleeping bags in 2025, 7.2% of home textile exports (Ministry of Trade); the group also covers cushions and poufs.
Guide to Pillows and Comforters

- Gizem Polat
Pillows and comforters (also sold as duvets or quilts; yorgan in Turkish) are sleep products made by putting siliconized fiber, down and feather, wool or memory foam (visco) filling into a cover fabric. Besides pillow and comforter manufacturers and suppliers, this category lists companies that make bedding sets with a comforter or pillow (uyku seti, “sleep set” in Turkish) and mattress protectors (alez).
Bed linen, meaning duvet cover sets, sheets, pillowcases, coverlets (pike) and bedspreads, is a separate category: a set that includes a comforter or pillow is listed here, while a set of covers and sheets only is listed there. Blankets have their own category. If you want loose filling fiber by the kilo or bale, see textile fibers; for roll or quilted wadding, see nonwoven companies. Sprung and foam mattress bodies are out of scope.
Name the filling first
Start the quote with the filling type. Fiber filling goes by different names: the specification example below calls the comforter filling “micro silikon elyaf” (micro silicone fiber) and the pillow filling “boncuk silikon” (bead silicone). The composition of down filling (the ratio of down to feather, and the bird species) is labeled under EN 12934; the standard was revised in February 2025 and now includes fill power labeling. Fill power (EN 12130) measures the volume taken up by a unit mass of filling. It does not show how much filling the product holds, so have the net fill weight written down as well.
What belongs in a pillow and comforter specification?
A dormitory bedding specification from a university in Turkey (Sabancı University, file date 2019) is a single example, not a standard, but it shows the line items: a 155×215 cm comforter with micro silicone fiber, 300 g/m² fill (about 8.8 oz/yd²) and 20×20 cm quilting; a 50×70 cm pillow with bead silicone and at least 850 g (about 30 oz); and a 100×200 cm mattress protector with 90 g/m² silicone fill, quilted, with elastic on all four edges. In your specification, state:
- Size and set contents
- Filling type and weight (g/m² for comforters, net grams for pillows)
- Cover fabric composition and thread count; thread count alone does not decide quality
- Quilting spacing and wash durability of the edge stitching
- Pieces per pack, labels and packaging
Down-proofing, ignitability and harmful substances
With down filling, the EN 12132-1 rubbing test measures how well the cover holds the filling in: particles that pass through the fabric or work out of it are counted. In contract-use settings such as healthcare facilities, a buyer may ask for an ignitability test. EN ISO 12952 covers bedding items such as pillows and comforters and defines two ignition sources, a smoldering cigarette (Part 1) and a match-flame equivalent (Part 2); Sweden asks for both for high-risk healthcare settings (RISE). On a harmful-substance certificate (OEKO-TEX; see the certifications guide for the types), ask whether the cover, the filling and the sewing thread are inside the scope. For testing, see textile testing laboratories.
Minimum order quantity and price
There is no official or sourced minimum; each company sets its own in its quote. Standard sizes made with filling and cover fabric the company already holds in stock make small quantities easier, while custom cover printing, sizes, labels or packaging may require higher quantities. Price is mainly affected by the type and amount of filling, the cover fabric, quilting and sewing labor, packaging and order quantity, so compare quotes at the same fill weight and size. Cover cutting and sewing can be done in contract sewing workshops (fason in Turkish); ask where the filling step takes place as well.
Export size and the province filter
According to the Ministry of Trade's Home Textiles Sector Report, exports of the group “pillows, comforters and sleeping bags” were USD 172.9 million in 2025 (2024: USD 181.4 million). The group is 7.2% of Turkey's home textile exports and also includes sleeping bags, cushions and poufs. The report says home textile production is concentrated in Bursa, Denizli, Istanbul, Izmir and Uşak, but it matches provinces to products only for towels, sheer curtains, sheets and blankets; it gives no province for pillows and comforters. Read the province filter as the company's headquarters. For other sub-sectors, see home textiles.

Frequently asked questions
What does the minimum order quantity for pillows and comforters depend on?
There is no official or sourced minimum; each company sets its own in its quote. Standard sizes made with filling and cover fabric the company already holds in stock make small quantities easier, while custom cover printing, sizes, labels or packaging may require higher quantities. Ask for the minimum for the product and for the packaging separately.
What should a pillow or comforter quote specify?
Size, filling type, fill weight (g/m² for comforters, net grams for pillows), cover fabric and thread count, quilting spacing, wash durability of the edge stitching, and pieces per pack. As one example, a dormitory bedding specification from a university in Turkey (Sabancı University, file date 2019) asked for a 155×215 cm comforter with 300 g/m² fill and a 50×70 cm pillow of at least 850 g; this is not an industry standard.
Which standards and tests apply to down-filled pillows and comforters?
The main ones are EN 12934 for composition labeling (revised in February 2025), EN 12130 for fill power, and the EN 12132-1 rubbing test for the down-proof properties of the cover fabric. Which one is needed depends on the buyer and the place of use; also ask which sample and lot a test report covers. Whether a mandatory label or document requirement applies in your target market, as of the date of this page, should be confirmed with a testing laboratory or your own compliance specialist.
How large are Turkey's pillow and comforter exports?
According to the Ministry of Trade, exports of the group “pillows, comforters and sleeping bags” were USD 172.9 million in 2025 (2024: USD 181.4 million, down 4.7%) and made up 7.2% of home textile exports. By the tariff-position (GTIP) list in the report, the group covers 9404.30, 9404.40 and 9404.90, that is sleeping bags, comforters and other filled articles such as pillows, cushions and poufs, so the figure is not for pillows and comforters alone.
