Automotive textiles cover seat fabric and covers, headliner and door-panel trim, carpet and floor covering, acoustic and thermal insulation surfaces, and safety products such as seat belts and airbags. This page lists companies supplying vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 companies (system suppliers that sell directly to vehicle manufacturers), as well as the aftermarket (the replacement-parts market). For general upholstery fabric see upholstery fabrics, for cabin and fuel filters see industrial filter fabrics, and for raw surfaces see nonwovens. Parent sector: technical textiles.

OEM or aftermarket?

They are two separate supply worlds. For supply to a vehicle manufacturer (OEM) or a Tier-1, the customer specification, quality system and approval process decide; contracts are generally built around a vehicle program and annual volume. In the aftermarket, lot sizes and the approval burden are generally more flexible, but responsibility for fit and durability stays with the seller. State at the outset which channel you sell to when you request quotes.

Ask an automotive textile supplier about IATF, specification and traceability

  • Quality system: IATF 16949 is the automotive quality management system standard, kept aligned with ISO 9001. Suppliers that want to work with Tier-1 companies and vehicle manufacturers are generally expected to hold it.
  • Specification compliance: Each vehicle manufacturer has its own material specification. Ask whether the company has met similar specifications before.
  • Initial sample approval: Before series production, the sample, tests and customer approval are required. Count this time within the lead time.
  • Change management and traceability: Is the customer notified when raw material, yarn, dye or process changes? Can a roll number be traced back to its lot?
  • Capacity and continuity: Will the company be able to supply the same fabric at the same quality throughout the production life of the vehicle model?
  • Minimum order (MOQ) and lead time: These generally depend on the vehicle program and the call-off plan (scheduled releases against the contract). Write the volume and delivery frequency into the contract.

Raw material, backing and annual volume set automotive textile price

Raw material (polyester, polyamide), surface construction (knitted, woven or nonwoven), foam or backing lamination, finishes such as flame retardancy and stain resistance, the number of colors, annual volume, and test and approval cost set the price. Raw material price swings matter in long contracts, so settle the price-revision terms in the contract.

Proximity and shipping

For jobs shipped in frequent small lots against a call-off plan, a supplier close to your customer's plant can reduce transit time and the need for buffer stock. Use the province filter to find companies near your customer's plant or your shipping point, but screen candidates first by specification compliance and quality system, and weigh distance last.

Frequently asked questions

Is IATF 16949 mandatory for an automotive textile supplier?

It is not a legal requirement; vehicle manufacturers and Tier-1 companies generally ask for it as a customer requirement. Check that the certificate covers the supplier's production site and product.

Which tests are requested for in-vehicle fabrics?

Burning behavior, odor, volatile emissions, light and rubbing fastness, abrasion and strength are often requested. The methods and limits are set by the vehicle manufacturer's material specification; instead of a generic list, share the relevant specification with the supplier.

How should I assess companies making seat belt and airbag fabric?

A failure in these products affects life safety. Besides the company certificate, expect product-level test records, lot traceability and approval by the vehicle manufacturer or the system supplier.

What sets the minimum order and lead time for automotive textiles?

For vehicle manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers, the minimum order and lead time generally depend on the vehicle program, annual volume and call-off plan (scheduled releases against the contract); there is no fixed sector-wide value. Sampling, testing and customer approval are required before series production, so count that time within the lead time. Write the volume and delivery frequency into the contract.

What sets the price of automotive textiles?

Raw material, surface construction (knitted, woven or nonwoven), foam or backing lamination, finishes (flame retardant, stain resistant), number of colors, annual volume, and test and approval cost set the price. Raw material price swings matter in long contracts, so write the price-revision terms into the contract.
